Hey guys- I'm not trying to the hijack the thread, but I think this falls under the "Is This Toast?" moniker....
It's the 3rd cylinder of a Force 85hp outboard that was given to me. The other two cylinders look perfect. I'm thinking this one might have rotated the rings or something. In these shots, the piston (lunched) is at the bottom of its stroke. I was thinking it wasn't so bad, until I saw the gouge just to the right of the top exhaust opening. I'm guessing it's close to 1/16" deep. I've read that these motors can go .030 over- but that won't clean THIS up. Also, these cannot be resleeved. (sp)
My question is , I've located a new piston/rod/ring set. If I smooth out the bore as best as possible, this will still fry the side of the piston, due to blow-by, huh? Seems a shame to toss it, but it was free.
