I found this in a customer's garage- I didn't even know you could get these, I don't drink that much! It's a 5 litre (1.25 gal) mini keg. I had to score it! I think it would make a sweet fuel tank. It is some kind of steel (ferrous), not aluminum. I'm not sure if it's just mild steel with an anti-rust coating or what.

Either way, I'm going to have to figure out how to cleanly make a cap and insert a barbed fitting. I HAVE to make a fuel tank outta this!!! :D

Ive seen these everywhere, including Walmart. I'm not a drinker, even being underage. Doesn't appeal to me. But, that would be a cool fuel tank. Definitely a head-turner ;)

Bear in mind that in most of Canada, including where I am- you cannot buy beer or liquor in a convenience store (or Walmart). It's simply not legal. You have to go to a beer or liquor store. Since I'm into a beer store MAYBE once every 6-8 months... well- I just haven't seen this. They might be new here, too.

Now I can see why you haven't seen these. I havent been to Canada, so I didn't know they had laws like that.

I hate to rain on the parade, but those tanks are unsafe to use. Way to thin friends. I was going to use one on my BSR. But thought better of it. To easy to crush. They are just a little thicker than a pop can. If you use them it should be well protected from impacts. Mounting them is another problem for they are so thin.

At my BSR forum these are a big no no to use on a BSR. I think the same for karts.

Bighead- As always, I appreciate your thoughts. That said, I do consider myself sufficiently competent to convert, mount, and use such a vessel as a fuel tank. Safety is always paramount in my mind, and I will therefore handle things accordingly. If/when I do this, you guys will be the first to know- and it will be open to your scrutiny.

Thanks for the information. I've never had one, let alone touched it. Good to know. Thanks Bighead, as always!

can you make a liner somehow?

does it already have a liner?

Yes I think there is a plastic bladder liner. I could be wrong. If I remember right you can remove the liner/ Been awhile so hard to remember for sure.

You can find these same kegs with no markings at home brewers sites. The one I have has a spout and a fill hole on top. I think I paid $10 plus shipping. I can take some pics if anyone wants to see it. Also will give it away for free but pay shipping if anyone wants it.

I was going to use it then got talked out of it. This is why I said be careful if going to use these. A stick can puncture them as well as your chains breaking or belt breaking.

I started fooling around with this the other night. I expelled the remaining propellant and cut the top open.

On this one, there's no liner. But there IS a propellant cartridge inside. I was able to work the cartridge out fairly easily, but there's a little plastic "cup" that it mounts to. This cup appears to be glued to the bottom of the canister.

I left a quart of acetone sitting in it for a couple of days to see if it would either dissolve the glue, plastic, or both. No joy.

On the chance it's hot glue, my next move is to gently heat the bottom of the canister (from the outside), and see if I can work the bracket off.

I'll put up a pic later showing the filler cap I'm going to use.

EDIT- Hot glue it is. I sat the can upside down, and pointed my heat gun at it. 10 seconds later- plop! Out it fell.

Now- another note for those with concerns, like Bighead. It is fairly thin, I'd put it as 1.5-2x as thick as a pop can. but it is stainless steel, which is a lot more puncture resistant than aluminum. I have put a significant amount of thought into mounting details, and I believe I have devised a suitable method. Yes, I believe this should be mounted in an impact-protected location. Should I choose to actually use this on one of my projects, it will be so. For now, it is merely and experiment.

Marine-type fuel filler...
