If your running the engine horizontal, why do you want a pulley? are you still going with a belt tensioner clutch?

cant afford a clutch for chain drive.

Explane what your exactly doin cause i cant see it.

laying out the parts...

BTWWWWW since i'm basically living off myself and have no access to a welder im bolting the frame together for now. (will weld eventually)

That looks like a great way to cut costs on the frame for the budget go kart builders! Then again what are those metal pieces and how much are they? I also agree with the clutch statement above when I start mine in the summer i won't have the money to buy a clutch and chain drive might as well use a tensioner clutch.

You abandon that transaxle?

Probably a good thing in the long run. Those Spicer transaxles use a weak clutch key to select the drive gear. Even single geared, if you didn't hard tack that shaft, you can expect to spin that key out in a hurry. Doesn't take much torque at all to shear/deform that bad boy. I know. I just went through trying to heat and rebend the existing keys to work and ended up having to replace it.

As far as it spinning then locking up, on the reassemble, did you make sure to line up the groove on the gear selector collar with the pin on the actual selector bar? That, and make sure you have the axles lined up right in the ring gear. It'll seal up off a tooth and will give a spin or two before freezing.

There's mods you can do to run gear oil in it that are pretty simple and straight forward. Might consider that, too. First time I cracked open mine it was greased, but it was thrown in every corner and cranny in the box with very little on the gears themselves. At least with a 90w it'd bathe the gears.

Keep us posted. I'm curious how you're going to run a live axle on a horizontal shaft without a transaxle/RAGB. I've cherrypicked a few ideas on here myself with an idler, but I got a feeling I'd lose so much efficiency it'd be a waste.

well i got those drilled bars, nut, bolts, washers, cast iron bar (live axle) at home depot for $66 and im making the bushings for the axle myself with some steel tubing i had in the basement. the bar im using as an axle wasnt keyed so im doing that myself with the grinder, i just got one side done turned out nice.

all in all im only in the hole about $166 not bad i guess.

other then that i need to reinforce the mid section

Also could i use a 2:1 gear ratio? because i found to sprockets in my basement

First of all you want bearings for the axle not bushings, grab some pillow blocks they can be had for $10 a piece and will bolt right on.

Second, no a 2:1 is WAYYYY to high, aim for around 6:1

You said you got a cast iron axle? cast iron is prone to fracture, are there keyways cut into it?.

From the pictures, you're running that live axle through just the pipe?

I think that's what Krunch was getting at. Steel on steel. Your axle will spin in that pipe, get smokin' hot, and shred itself to bits. And given enough expansion from heating, may catastrophically fail hence the pillow block suggestion.

With steel on steel that wont last long, grease will be spun off in a matter of minutes. Just buy 2 pillow blocks, you can get them at TSC for $10 a piece.

since no one has asked yet I will, is the angle steel you show in the pictures going to be the finished frame or is it just for mock up ?
because if it is the finished frame i would really question its ability to hold up to any bumps or bounces at all and it will also have a ton of semi-sharp edges

just my .02

Even car axles aren't steel on steel. They have bearings.

yea, i was kinda out of it yesterday sorry but im good today. sat down studied the axle on my fairlady abit and noticed a few things.

Kinda. It's actually a bearing set in a mounting collar, as you'll see from the link below.
