Hey guys, well i was wondering some symptoms of a overheating engine.

I have a VM100 (i think) that gets pretty darn hot. After a 5 minute run, let sit for 1/2 hour and i can stil burn myself on the pull start.....

The plug wire bubbled a little from the heat coming out of the blower housing.

It runs good and starts first pull.

I heard these motors are known to run hot but prob not this hot... Also already cleaned grass out of the cooling fins.

Any help is appreciated....

run the exhaust out farther? change oil? only things i can think of.

Find a way to get it more air whether it's remove some panels or add a few nicely cut holes. I can see how that hood and all could be restrictive. I'm assuming it's air cooled.

Take a look at the spark plug, if the electrode/insulator is all chalky-white your engine has been running extremely lean, that'll make-em run hot.

i changed the oil with some good pennzoil. i plan to get a real diesel tractor exhaust and run it out the side! thanks.

hmm.... maybe run the filter without that plastic cover on it? im sure it doesnt do much.... thanks.

plug looked O.K.... i replaced it (first time i bought a new spark plug in my life, i think)

key is fine. the exhaust is pretty loud...... but i plan to run a much bigger full size tractor exhaust, with the flapper and all, thanks.

ahh well, ill end up taking the whole pipe off anyways to put in the modded exhaust.

im thinking if i cant get ahold of a tractor exhaust, or car exhaust, ill mount a briggs muffler with a flapper

i un bolted the exhaust today and guess what was underneath??

now how am i supposed to get it out.............

If it wont unscrew with a liberal PJ blaster soaking / hammer and a punch,
you might try carefully cutting it out in sections with a sawzall or just the blade from a hacksaw.

Thing is, your gonna get metal shavings in your combustion chamber... If you dont wanna tear it down you might try deep-packing the chamber with a small rag soaked in grease. That way after your done you could just fish the rag out, with hopefully all the metal particles stuck to it.

You'd already beat the crap out of It so I'm not sure what It looked like before.

Did it seem like it was an old screw-in type muffler/pipe that broke off, or was cut off flush?

Thanks Capt. Obvious. I was looking more along the lines of "There's a _____ in your exhaust!"

The "restrictor" shouldn't be there at all.

That is the remains of a screw in muffler. The engine torques alot, and the pipe must have torqued into the frame and WHAM cracked off. Whoever did it just covered it up with a bolt on muffler.

Why does this have to have happened????? Ugh!

I didnt make many attempts to turn it out... What you see in the pic is what it is and has always looked.


EDIT: also there was no exhaust gasket at all

Drown it in PB and try to get some vise-grips on it, or if your slick, weld a long bit of metal to it for a handle and take it out...

i already tried to weld a piece on and it didnt work. just broke off more of the pipe.

i guess ill try the sawzall method first..

I would try a hack saw, bit more control.

Did you weld a smaller diameter pipe inside of that piece and weld a long piece onto that?
Seems like it would work...
