Tecumseh OHH60 replacement suggestions

Hello all! Been a minute since I posted here and was considering some upgrades to the go kart for this spring/summer.

Have a yerf dog 3202 with Tecumseh OHH60 6.5hp engine with TAV30 torque converter.

Would like to upgrade the engine to something with electric start. Doesn't have to be a whole lot more powerful but a little boost might be cool.

Something that would be easy to mount a reverse gear box on would be nice as well. Still a little in the dark in regards to what this involves.

Anything reasonably priced out there some might recommend?

Cool you got a yerfdog 3202 just like me i suggest a predator 420 swap it will run like a champ forever and have eletric start!

Yeah, a 420 would be cool, but it has too much power for your standard reverse box, which is rated for 7 hp.
I've had my eye on the Duromax XP7HPE. It's a 7 hp 196cc clone, with electric start and a charging coil. (uses a 12v 6.5 ah battery)

Since it's a clone engine there are performance parts for it, and it should be almost a bolt on swap. The reason I say almost is because you might need to cut a new spacer for the clutch.

I actually can get a 7hp briggs for free from my father in law which I've been considering. I would have to get an electric start kit as well for this which I need to get a specific model number on and take a closer look to see if it's possible.

Would not be removing the governor as this would be strictly for trail riding which leads to the reason I want a reverse gearbox. If you get jammed up around a corner or whatever, you can try wiggling out with reverse.

Couple good reviews of it and seems to be all inclusive. I just can't for the life of me make out how these things mount. Even watching some youtube videos. Have to do some more searching.

Actually...looking closer...does the gear box replace the typical jack shaft which i already have on my kart?

Uhhm, if you're willing to give up reverse, you could get a 10HP Tillotson Hemi electric start.
It would be governed, but at ~5500 RPM.

As a bonus, it's ~$50 less than the 7 HP DuroMax.
And quite frankly:
Is it that hard to get out and pull your kart?

As I said, I don't need or want speed. I only have a small area that is actually open but a ton of woods to explore and have fun climbing around.

That kind of speed on a trail will get you stuck in a briar patch at which point I bet you would want that reverse.

Kidding of course, but again, don't want or need speed. There will be some tighter spots on the trail I'm making where reverse could really come in handy. Speed will not come in handy.

A year ago when I first got this kart I would have snatched that right up. Unfortunately, the location I had available to take advantage of power like that is no longer available.

I'm leaning towards going with this free briggs engine. I mean, it's free! Still don't have details on it. Need to go take a look soon.

Looks like a lot of briggs engines may come stock with ring gears which would of course be good for adding a starter. Also seem to be some after market options.

Not to afraid to fabricate stuff if I have to.

Anyone have any more information/experience with reverse gear boxes? Think it's just going to be a matter of getting one and seeing how to best link it up with my current kart, but thought it was worth asking. Can't find to much info on the forum here.

Yea go with the briggs waaaay easyer to fix if somethin breaks than a newer engine and you get a piece of history on your kart! I'd say go with the briggs, but something about it being free, makes me think that it either is seized, or it needs a lot of work.

A. the Home Depot xp7hpe is $57 cheaper than the tillotson e-start.
And B. if you leave the governor in and turn the engine up to 5500 rpm, it will no longer be a governed engine. I can almost guarantee that the governor will grenade.

OK, I was only looking at the AMAZON price on the DuroMax, which IS $50 MORE than the Tillotson.
But the HOME DEPOT listing DOES have it for about $50 LESS.
And actually, I am 100% sure that the Tillotson is fine at a governed 5500 RPM.
From the factory, they come with:
A flywheel rated for 10,000 RPM!
A governor(yes, a governor) that governs not at 3600 RPM, but 5,500 RPM!
I guarantee it.
And yes, being a free engine it has probably been abused, or needs a ton of work.
I'm talking possibly cylinder bore issues!

It's not the metal internals that would break. It's the plastic governor wheel, which at an engine speed of 5500 rpm, would be spinning at 7660 rpm. I am 99.9% certain that a plastic gear that costs $2 will not handle those rpm. but lets see what some of the experts think.

My father in law is giving me the briggs off of a wood chipper that has probably been used only a handful of times and starts on the first pull.

Pretty sure it will be ok for awhile.

8 ponies is pretty good! But you won't find as many aftermarket parts as a 5 pony flathead.
