A new replacement carb's not going to be perfectly setup from the factory I don't believe. He needs to have a baseline to go from--the initial adjustments one has to make for a new carburetor or one that has been reassembled.

It could be set too rich or too lean or a whole host of other problems could be in play upsetting the chemical/mechanical romance that must take place for the engine to run.

Consider it all a learning experience but if you take the easy way out (The Harbor Freight option), you'll be vanquished, my friend.

That's the thing about those Tech carbs...like I said: "They are PLUG AND PLAY! " There is no idle or high speed jet adjustment on them...the only thing you can change is the idle speed (butterfly opening) ...

Wow. That should be a superior carburetor then. I guess it's gravity feed too?

Maybe he's feeding it craptacular gas? Gas that's a year old or more and gone rancid I would bet. That stuff doesn't ignite.

EDIT: He doesn't need that coupon. ;)

Does it start with carb cleaner?
I've only used starter fluid, but yes, it does start with it.

Coupon as requested. Consider yourself vanquished, James200017, by the glorious invention of civilized man... Hurry! Less than a week remaining on this coupon.

It's actually fresh gas, within the past week. It's the highest octane I could get without going to the airport. It does idle, after some fiddling around, but the biggest problem is the fact that whenever I give it gas, it doesn't go. It seems to surge. I really don't want to have to buy a harbor freight. I both want to learn from fixing it and not have to replace a whole engine for a (hopefully) simple fix. I should have never touched the carb to begin with, but I hope that I am able to fix the issue without having to replace the whole engine. The engine ran fine previous to me screwing it up.

The inane comments from my "compatriots" are a bit irresponsible but I believe they are misguided attempts at lightening the mood, for whatever reason that might be.

This guy does a pretty good series of comprehensive videos...

We are men (some of us, sorry ). We fix things.

Despite differences, we are united by this common hobby and the stated charter of the forum is to DIY. Anyone can buy a new engine but do we ever learn anything by taking the easy route?

Spark? air? fuel?
You got spark.
Did you check the air filter?

Check for leaks around the carb gasket.

While idling, spray starter fluid around the carb gasket.
Listen for change in RPM. If the RPM changes, you got a leak.
If you got a leak, the air fuel ratio may be way off.

So, I do have a leak. Is it as simple as getting a new gasket? I will just in case. I'll go to Napa tomorrow and see if they have it.

Also, when you remove and add new gaskets, the mating surfaces have to be like factory new to get a good seal. When people speak of scraping off old gaskets they're using a special tool to scrape them off and the residue that's left behind. Gaskets rarely come apart cleanly especially where heat's been involved (i.e., gaskets attached to engine blocks and cylinder heads).

So..... New gasket, along with some gasket sealer solved the leak. However, no luck with giving it gas whatsoever. I can not give it any gas or it just surges and stalls. Anything else that could be the source of this problem?

Is your carb anything like the one in the video I posted? If so, did you follow the instructions?

Yes, I followed everything in it. The only thing is I don't have the cap to go over the gas jet. But, the video is for cleaning out that jet, if it gets clogged. Mine wasn't since it is a brand new carb. Thanks anyways for the video.

One of 3 things:

You got a bad carb....

You jacked something up in re-hooking up your linkage....

There is a split or blockage from your gas tank to carb in the fuel line....

I'm betting on #2....but IDK....In real life...this would take about 5 minutes to diagnose AND fix...but it's harder over the net!

Why I always like finding out someone is close by.....

Now, when you say linkage, do you mean with the little butterfly thing? Throttle linkage? Or do you mean something with the fuel lines?

Well...ultimately..it IS always the butterfly...but how you get there is the question....because that engine does have a kinda weird throttle hook-up
...and we haven't seen a lot of pics....so...who knows?
