I am actually quite satisfied with my GTC so far, the bearings, springs, and nylon buttons all seem to be of pretty good quality, along with the back plate and clutches.

The only things I'm disappointed about are:

1. The more i find put, the more I feel as though i was ripped off/lied too through false advertising.

2. I feel like it was just my luck that i got stuck in the small period of time where GTC was the only choice other than that guy on ebay.

Like i said, it works, and seems to take abuse, but i still want a Comet.

EDIT: augidog, i would quite like it if you stuck around, i'm interested to see your completed project.
I kinda got into the MB stuff while building my "tom thumb mini bike", which i used a 50cc HT engine from thatsdax.com. I would have rather got a non chines engine, but i couldn't get anything like it for a price i could even come close to affording. But like you said, i searched around, and looked for the best chines import i could find, so far so good.

...look what i just scored: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/?cmd...&_osacat=0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m270.l1313&_fvi=1

i gotta say, guys, this has been a blast. and yes r97 i'll gladly post my project here, too...i kinda like this place, there's enough to keep me going "ooh" and "ahh" even if i'm not much involved with the bigger stuff. but, i DO have some ideas about the efficiency side of vehicles in your power/weight class...but that's for later this winter when i get bored.

EDIT: T-man, nice pics. i don't yet know what i'm looking at, quality-wise, but in a couple weeks i'll have the real deal in my hands and i'll be able to sorta compare.

fwiw, i just received what i'm sure is a chinese driven unit from steve @ bmi (on sale for 31 bucks!), and it's a very decent looking piece, i'm pleased to say, and works as it should.
my old comet was suffering from a mangled backing plate (it had obviously caught the chain rollers before i got the cart; i beat it true as i could) and a dead spring; i'd ziptied 3 small 1/4-drive sockets in to keep it from spreading like a tijuana stripper on a tuesday night.

toystory, it works absolutely fine far as i can tell.
my belt's quite loose but it's performing well anyway.
i'd like my driver to engage at a lower rpm; are there any lighter springs or heavier flyweights available for 30 series?

while i'm in this thread, lemme show you what GTC has done about our inquiries...this is off their newly edited frontpage...

GTC Torque Converters replace the popular Comet TAV2 Torq-A-Verter and Comet Clutch which are no longer available
yaknow, this whole lying-importer business is way out of hand...how can we force details (and the truth) out of these people? i'm declaring it my personal goal to learn who and where they really are, and have contacted Hoffco/Comet to see if there's any trade violations that can be used as leverage to learn the truth.

hehe, well...i'm not exactly doing it for anyone in particular, but doggone now something has to change...all these ebay listings for all sorts of things, full of lies...and real companies and brand names receive no protection. it's making me sick, all this money-grubbing.

here's the BBB report on gokartsusa, which we already learned shares an address with gtc:

Sure! But let me at least believe you're doing your community a service!:roflol:

You're right, though. Stuff like this totally redefines the "buyer beware" thing, and has the potential to mislead thousands of ignorant consumers. Please note that I am using "ignorant" in the traditional sense, meaning "uninformed".

you can think that if'n you want...heck, whenever i went after scammers in the MaB world, noone wanted to know...and i was consistantly shouted down. so, ok, yeah...i'm doing it for the 'karters hehe.

i did find these RC-car importer guys in CA, with a curious "clue"

about_company.jpg

cen racing also has a bad bbb rating...think this might be a lead?

i think it isn't, i think the gtc thing is as made-up as their "about us" page. it seems a decent product that should be able to compete for an honest & fair market-share, so why won't they either prove the "Made in USA" or remove the claim? and using another's company's branding so blatantly, all over ebay they're doing it, geez to this layman that screams infringement litigation. like you, i know the practice lures thousands of consumers down the wrong road, and leads to a lot of 1st-time impulse sales. let's face it, in most cases they're busy enough to not give one little turd if they get a second sale or not.
