The spragg clutch/one way bearing.... Acts exactly like the freewheeler on a bicycle....
The bike while in a selected gear can move without the pedals turning. They will be like that until the rider overcomes the inertia...and the pedalling continues to move the bike....

Comet 2 Setup
"The clutch on the engine simply has two sprockets on it. One chain goes to the one way clutch and the other goes to the clutch on the jackshaft. the one way clutch is first gear. the clutch on the jackshaft is second gear which has its sprocket on the weight side and the bell is solid on the shaft. when the speed gets high enough on the jackshaft the weights solid up second gear which frespins 1st and off you go. "

Fairbanks morse setup:
"you have two clutches one on the engine and one on the jack shaft. On the engine, besides the clutch you have a gear that's direct drive off the engine, it drives a driven gear by chain on the jack shaft that has a spragg (one way) clutch in it. That chain and gears gets the clutch on the jack shaft up to engagement speed and it starts driving the back wheel, that's low speed. The clutch on the engine which engages at a higher rpm than the jack shaft clutch, and the gear it drives by chain on the jack shaft have a higher gear ratio, so when that clutch does engage, it over drives the jack shaft past the spragg clutch on the low speed driven gear, that's high gear."
