I have a briggs that has a tapered crank shaft but it has a not tapered section about 1 1/2". Can I use that or do I need a new crank.

Also it has no keyway can I cut my own with a dremel and tones of time or should I take it to a machine shop.

Lastly im on a extra super megga tight budget.
-Thanks

Measure the non-taper length with a caliper to see if it has a appropriate OD for a standared size clutch first. You can cut your own keyway just fine with a dremel, It just takes time and patience. Machine shop and "extra super megga tight budget" dont mix.

I believe the size of the keyway depends on the diameter of the shaft, like if it's 1", the keyway would be 1/4".

I have cut keyways just with an angle grinder, but you probably want a more professional job.

I had the same problem with the tapered shaft, my motor was from a 5 hp briggs generator an old ugly green one!! but i work in a machine shop so i had the machinest put a ket in it for me.

good luck with doing it yourself " ive seen it done too"
