Hi guys just ordered a 6.5 hp predator from h.b for $87! I have never worked on a kart before the kart has a torque converter. How hard is the swap? Any tips? Can't wait to get it running think I am more stoked than my kids! Lol Thanks everyone!

Thanks now I can sleep better! Can't believe got the engine for $87 with shipping thanks to your advice. Pics would definitely make it easier. Can't wait to post pics when I complete.

Depending on a number of factors, it might not be as easy as a straight swap (hopefully it is though).

1. Like soup asked - is the shaft the same diameter as the tec?
2. The tec might have a different bolt patter than the predator. This might mean fabricating a new motor mount, or drilling new holes in it.
3. The throttle linkages will more than likely be different (this shouldn't be too hard to overcome though. We can help you with that.

Pics will help a lot though

Oh, and welcome to the forum. You won't regret being here

I've recently swapped a Tec Powersport for a new HF Predator. The swap was pretty much straight forward. The only issue was the Predator shaft was not as long as the Tec shaft. I had to get a shaft bolt a little longer from the hardware store. Take your old one for comparison.
As for the throttle hook-up, the new Predator has everything there to make your connections. It's great. I did add an extra return spring. You can see it in the pic.
Last thing, make sure you unplug the low oil sensor on the front of the engine. If not, your engine may shut off on turns.
Good luck and have fun!
Oh yeah, and loosen the 10mm bolt you see in the picture so the throttle moves easy!

Just went from a Tec (poorly maintained, missing a carb and recoil starter) to a Predator on a Yerf-Dog, oughta be very similar if not exactly same.

You'll need a 3/4" long, 3/4" id spacer to move the Comet driving unit out the same distance from the engine. A piece of 3/4" iron pipe cut to length would work just fine.

Then a longer bolt for the crankshaft, iirc it's a 5/16 fine thread.

The hook up the throttle like pictured and mentioned above and you're on your way!

Do you mean very similar in terms of size or performance. I'm wondering if it's worth the upgrade from my 5.5hp 195cc. I'd be loosing my electric start though :ack2:

The footprint should be very close, if not the same.

IMO, your best option is to repair/mod your existing engine to give it a bit more grunt; bore hone, new rings, a little head work, high flow air filter & staight exhaust should net you close to 7hp or more. Then you have the best of both worlds :)

Thanks all! Got old engine off about to start the tear down. I will post pics when I start the true swap. Looks like the shaft may be the same. We will see. Here we go!

well got h.f on the kart

It appears the shaft may be a bit shorter on the h.f than the tec. The belt pully's don't line up off by just a hair. I guess im going to grind down the shaft spacer a bit. Net come hooking up throttle. Getting there!

I meant in terms of size and mounting dimensions, I got my yerfdog without a running engine so I can't compare it to anything.

Electric start is pretty dang handy, hard to willingly give that up, imho.

Made some progress today! Worked on cosmetics im going to rhino line the whole kart! I do have a few more tec questions. Got the t/c mounted the belt is on but just does not feel tight? How tight should it be and how would you adjust? Also I forgot how the t/c cover goes on? Lol keep in mind this is my first kart. Lol soon as I get past that I have to figure out how to hook up the throttle. Long way to go but im hooked! Its a blast! Ps love the forum!

CVT belt should NOT be tight, and is NOT adjustable. As long as you have ordered the correct belt for your application, don't worry about it. It is supposed to be loose until the engine begins to accelerate.
