Glad you kept at it. 
Well the carbs are not rocket science but they all suffer from neglect and stale gasoline. No telling what issues you had with it, maybe main jet clogged (easy fix by rodding it out with thin copper wire). Keep the old carb and tinker with it.
Often times a parts cannon assault (throwing all new parts at it) on an engine will fix it. Nuff said.
Spring set $20 carb rebuild kit $20 (a waste of time money and effort, never run well until I put the new carb on) countless hours later the Kart is running as it should! Thanks for all the help, references, etc.
