Converting smelly old gas powered go karts to these new, efficient little electric motors is getting more & more popular

I have done quite a few

...they are BAD AZZ :2guns:

The problem I have run into (& many others, from my understanding) is that these motors come with "oddball" drive sprockets :ack2:

I have seen them come with either

...a little dinky 11 tooth sprocket for a #25 chain (like on Razor Scooters)

...or a 9 tooth sprocket for a #8 mm chain (Who has 8mm stuff?)

Most (mid size) karts (Made in the USA, anyways) have driven sprockets for #35 chain

Well, lets just get a motor drive sprocket for #35 chain

NOPE, no one (I have found) sells them or can even get them :ack2:

Really!, its just a little flat sprocket

What's the big deal?

Well, what are the options?

...it's not, a good idea to try runnin a mid size go kart on little, dinky #25 chain

...plan B. just get a ~60 tooth x 8mm driven sprocket & some 8mm chain

NOPE, I found some 8mm chain but, couldn't find much in the way of 8mm driven sprockets

I figured, it can't be that hard to make 'em

...or have some made up

But, I couldn't find anyone local to make 'em either

Went on Alibaba (seemed easy enough)

...request a quote

...get a quote (or multiple quotes)

...if ya make a deal, send 'em some money

That was way back in September

...made a deal on a batch of sprockets

...went to sent 'em the money

...then ya find out about the fees

Sending money STRAIGHT to China is kind of a "big deal"

...ya gotta swear to a bunch of stuff (like your NOT money laundering)

Then there are the fees

...their bank charge $25.00 (it was on the invoice?)

...shipping over $100.00 (from China)

...a bank fee $35.00 (my bank, charges me, a fee, to send my money?)

...transfer fee $10.00 (who knows?)

Then, BOOM! (4) months later

...we got sprockets

...lots & lots of sprockets

* One small step for man, one giant leap for electric go karts :cheers2:

Great, but I'll stick to smelly old gas powered go karts.

I understand

but, what ya gonna do when gas is

...$5.00, $10.00 or even $20.00 per gallon?

It's coming. (sooner or later) :smiley_omg:

I'ma be baskin' in the sun

Solar power chargin' up my karts-n-all

* Think of "The Road Warrior" or "Zombie Apocalypse" situations.

...when the gas is all gone

...or the infrastructure to produce &/or distribute it is compromised

Solar still works

...day after day

...keep on crusin' :auto:

...or living etc... :2guns:

That'll happen in the next 20 years, unless something changes I think most will stick to gas and oil burners for a while. Granted if electric kits were more plug n play and offered the same speed performance for the same money, then I think it'll be more popular.

I have to agree with Functional Artist. It may take 10 or more years, but the days of the internal combustion engine are numbered. The technological advances in electric vehicles will be relentless. As to the cost of a kilowatt hour, it is likely to fall longer term as more electricity is generated by residential solar (again it may take a decade).

Sprocket update

I gave the 10t #35 chain sprockets a kool name

They are now known as "Power Curve Sprockets" :2guns:
(working on a kool logo)
...& I sold, pretty much, the whole lot, of sprockets, to

Alpha Wheels, a company based in Florida, USA with a good reputation
...& they have a lot of electric scooter/go kart parts available.

This way there is a reliable, distribution outlet.

Check them out

I had an okay experience with Alfa wheels.. they shipped fast and everything but they did not realize they had sent me a ZY1020 when their listing clearly stated MY1020. Since I brought it back to Canada I have a really big and heavy paperweight sitting around.

From my research

A MY1020 & a ZY1020 are "basically" the same

...or (1) is a "clone" of the other (1)

...just a different label or "sticker"

I have used both "MY" & "ZY" motors

...(personally) I could not tell much of a difference

...in quality or performance :cheers2:

Was there a problem, other than the label?
