Converting smelly old gas powered go karts to these new, efficient little electric motors is getting more & more popular
I have done quite a few
...they are BAD AZZ
The problem I have run into (& many others, from my understanding) is that these motors come with "oddball" drive sprockets
I have seen them come with either
...a little dinky 11 tooth sprocket for a #25 chain (like on Razor Scooters)
...or a 9 tooth sprocket for a #8 mm chain (Who has 8mm stuff?)
Most (mid size) karts (Made in the USA, anyways) have driven sprockets for #35 chain
Well, lets just get a motor drive sprocket for #35 chain
NOPE, no one (I have found) sells them or can even get them
Really!, its just a little flat sprocket
What's the big deal?
Well, what are the options?
...it's not, a good idea to try runnin a mid size go kart on little, dinky #25 chain
...plan B. just get a ~60 tooth x 8mm driven sprocket & some 8mm chain
NOPE, I found some 8mm chain but, couldn't find much in the way of 8mm driven sprockets
I figured, it can't be that hard to make 'em
...or have some made up
But, I couldn't find anyone local to make 'em either
Went on Alibaba (seemed easy enough)
...request a quote
...get a quote (or multiple quotes)
...if ya make a deal, send 'em some money
That was way back in September
...made a deal on a batch of sprockets
...went to sent 'em the money
...then ya find out about the fees
Sending money STRAIGHT to China is kind of a "big deal"
...ya gotta swear to a bunch of stuff (like your NOT money laundering)
Then there are the fees
...their bank charge $25.00 (it was on the invoice?)
...shipping over $100.00 (from China)
...a bank fee $35.00 (my bank, charges me, a fee, to send my money?)
...transfer fee $10.00 (who knows?)
Then, BOOM! (4) months later
...we got sprockets
...lots & lots of sprockets
* One small step for man, one giant leap for electric go karts
