So I'm building a shifter kart and I have a 1inch bore axle with a 1/4 keyway. I need a sprocket for a 428 chain and it needs to have 16 -18 teeth. I just can't find them anywhere online.

Yea I was going to call them, but I was wondering if there was just a sprocket online I could order before I pay extra (I'm assuming)

Looking this up - and please experts correct me if I am wrong - maybe the closest match to this chain is #40? If that is true, a search for Martin Sprocket 40BS16 (16 tooth) will yield results.

That sprocket is almost exactly what I need but I don't know if the keyway is the right size. Are you sure that 428 chain is the same as 40?

The difference between the 428 and 40 is the roller size on the chains....sooo...the rollers won't fully seat on the sprocket. However, it's so close it works....sooo....???

Me.....I'd get it ....and if it wasn't 1/4"....just take a file and make it work....(this IS DIY, after all! )

Good luck!

Well its not exactly the same. The rollers on 428 chain are 2 100ths larger, I think. They'd fit a worn sprocket fine probably. The Martin Sprockets website lists the part below. It has a 1/4" keyway. Search ebay for "40BS16 1" with or without the 1.

I got the sprocket in the mail, and it kinda fits. Is there any way to stretch the chain/modify the sprocket at all to make them fit better? I want to go around 80 mph, I don't think a 428 chain would really fall off but I don't what to take any chances. I would prefer not to use a file or some ****

If you don't have access to a shop with a mill, the file is your only option. Does the chain ride high on the sprocket? Modifying the chain is not an option, IMO.

I would but I'm 15 and I'm working on the kart in my parents garage, all I have are tools, welders, grinders, etc. I'm dont think I can machine parts in any way.

I guess I could use a file, I feel like I would make it uneven though. Probably still going to anyway. I don't think I would modify the chain, just stretch it. Is there anyway to stretch the chain?
I bet if I put the chain on and focred onto the sprockets it might adapt, should I just do that?

A good file, used with patience and care can help you get this done. Being 15 my not help with the patience part, but think of it this way: chicks will dig that you are a craftsman.

A round file is a wonderful tool for this....along with patience, because you can slowly remove material...(and you shouldn't have to remove much.
