If the weld is good then the slag will come off in large chunks, or one large chunk. If it is really difficult to get off then something is wrong, or the rods just produce weird slag.
That's a great weld.

7018 rods are low hydrogen rods. Before using them you have to bake them in an oven for a while at a specific temperature (found on the web). Then you take them out of the oven and can use them. They are good for 2 hours out of the oven before they become useless again and have to be dried again.

7018 is generally used for high strength critical stuff. They have to be dry because the arc will convert any water into hydrogen, ruining the low hydrogen properties of the rod.

Yup, Nice weld.

It will have something to do with you using good rods too.

I wouldn't recomend anyone use General purpose rods, get Low Hydrogen rods. Practice & get good at it.

-----------
In general purpose welding heating the rods isn't that important.

I know in doing a welding test or critical welds I will use preheated dry rods.
They are normally stored in a old fridge thats got a hot lightbulb or element in it to keep the rods dry. Or straight out of the box.

At home I jst make sure they don't get wet, if they do I will heat them again, but normally don't have too.

-------------

Welding stainless with steel rods.

Yeah, the weld may rust.
Depending on the quality of the stainless steel depends on how much they will rust, better quality (non magnetic) = less rust.
Normally its just a surface rust specks.
Thats Ok for home, no need to get special rods etc.

At work, thats a different matter.....

I do structual work on barges and although you should bake your rods, its not exactly necessary. Like stated above, as long as ure 7018 rods arent wet, you should be ok. 7018 can take you alot of places if learn to run it right. Lots of practice, lots of patience.
