What a day. Found out my daughter's baby is going to be a boy.Yeah-first grandson!!!

Two hours later I found out that my best buddy Sammy-alias "bobo head" is sick. I know what's wrong with him-(he's blocked) so I'll have to take that big.ol' cat to the vets in the morning.

Last time they had to anesthetize and catheter him and he was there for a week.

Just feed the thing a mixture of prunes and spicy salami, that'll clear him up good. Trust me, it works.

'Fraid not! That won't make him pee. Besides he could barely move and hadn't eaten in 24+ hours already. I'm just happy he made it through the night. A plugged bladder is an emergency situation with a cat.

Thanks. When I called to check up on him at 4pm yesterday, he was passed out, so I won't know until I call in a few minutes how he's doing. Then I'm going to go visit him.

Last time the vet said he would have to have a special diet, but when I asked him about it, he asked me what I was feeding him. I told him and he said "That's good enough for now. " This was in April and now I know he'll need a change. I thought about doing it anyway- but I don't have any spare money. Now I wish I had- because it would have been cheaper than this and might have saved him some misery.

On the upside- I have my pontoon boat ready to put back together. I also have the 5 hp Tecumseh ready to put back on the kart.I need help for both because I can't put the two halves of the boat together or take the kart off the stands by myself and I don't want to add weight to the kart beforehand.

Sammy was a stray.When he first adopted me he was mean.He would bite me on the ankle and run off. He would scratch the crap out of me.He would hiss if I bumped him with my foot.I came to believe his previous owners had kicked and abused him.I knew that feet really bothered him.

I tried for a long time to be patient with him and kill him with kindness with limited success. One night I was sleeping and he reached under the pillow where my hand was and ripped open my index finger nearly to the bone.

I hollered - he ran and hid and I grabbed a tennis shoe.I chased him all over and kept missing him-then I got him cornered.After I connected-(and he knew it was coming)- Sammy quit taking my kindness for granted and started coming around.

Anyway, I think a big part of the problem was he was still a kitten in a 13lb. body.The vets list him at 2yrs old.I think I've had him that long but anyway he's a young cat.He's cool now but he still attacks once in awhile, but he doesn't hurt me doing it-(it's all in fun).

So- Quick update- He was awake today when I visited but heavily sedated and I don't think he recognized me.But I guess he's doing alright, time will tell.

All of this is just one of the reason's I don't keep pets. And for the record, I'm a cat person, not a dog person. It's not that I hate dogs, it just that if a cat is high maintenance when your job has you on the road 5 to 6 days a week, where does that leave a dog?

I won't keep any kind of pet if I can't take proper care of it: it's also the reason I got out of raising livestock.

All that being said, I can so feel for you all. Pet's somehow worm their way into your life, and (to steal a phrase from a favorite author) become "forever younger children". They seem to understand when you've had a bad day, and don't hold it against you (usually).

The fact that I have some really severe allergies when it comes to any critter that has a fur coat doesn't help my case. What are you supposed to do, when you can't pet them, hug them, make friends with them without risking a trip to the ER?

It really stinks.....

Get a snake. I have Sammy, a bubble blowing Betta, and a 5' wild caught Texas rat snake. The Betta has to be fed every day. Sammy wants to eat several times a day, and Oscar (snake) once every 2-3 weeks. Oscar doesn't have fur, but she does shed. Low maintenance pet.

So a quick update: Visited Sammy today. He's drinking water and eating a little bit. He was much more alert and responsive to petting but still not close to being himself and very, very thin.I could see all his vertebrae. I'm hoping he'll be able to come home this week.

Well, I just found out that my trucks not worth a dam in snow and ice without weight in the back. We just had the first snowfall of the year and I forgot the most important rule for a 2wd truck and left for school without putting any weight in the bed. I was just taking my time on the highway at a few km's under the speed limit when the truck gave a shudder, I figured it was just the rear tire going over some slush that fell off of the wheel well. Then it did it again. Thought I had better pull off and see what was making the truck shudder, so I let off the gas and the back end slid to the right a bit then flung all the way around left and into the ditch I went. I did a nice 180 into the ditch and continued another 20m backwards. The rear end was airborne for a few feet and slammed hard into the other side of the ditch.

I wasn't hurt and had a good laugh when I saw that I had ditched it right in front of the wreckers, kinda like adding insult to injury. I'll post pics of the minor carnage in another thread.

Be careful and toss some weight in the back before the weather turns nasty.

WHOOPS!

Back when I had a 2wd pickup, I carried two large plastic storage bins (the good rubbermaid ones) filled with rock salt. It made for great ballast and if I ever found myself in an icy spot, I had plenty o' salt to go around! The bins fit nicely - one on each side between the wheelwell and the front wall of the box.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Around here we don't bother with all that stuff. We just stay home the one or two days a year the roads get icy.
