Smoking Clutch??

Ok, So I was riding my new kart around today, and 2 problems occurred. BOTH resulted in smoke coming out lol.

First off, the guy i bought it from said he used WD-40 to oil the clutch. I thought this would be bad cause it would just slip. So is that what was causing the clutch to smoke? Was it the WD-40 burning you think? And then what do I oil it with? or do I not?

Second, the brakes were falling off(its a drum break) So i put it back on, but its worn very weird. And there is nothing to spring it back after you release the brake pedal. So it just rides on the brake drum. So it got very hot, started smoking as well, and now the breaks wont work It just slides. I think its cause its hot?

Bottom line....
1) Is that WD-40 burning on my clutch and should I re-oil it?
2) What would be the best brake setup, another drum or disk brakes?

Maybe he meant to oil the part of the clutch where it idles on the crankshaft? Yes, oiling the pads = slipping = smoking. Same with the brakes.

Ok, so you dont need to oil the clutch at all?

the most probable reason for your brakes not working will most likely be that they have gotten too hot & formed a glaze on the shoe lining surface probably mostly from having OIL ON THEM soak them in straight fuel overnight & buff them with coarse sandpaper if you cannot replace them should do the trick discs would always be a better brake though have fun

get a return spring so that doesnt happen again. As for clutch i used to have to do that to my clutch. It was on the sproket side in and we sprayed a little between motor case and cltch, this is because the clutch was use so much the bushing had eroded away into nothing. I will be fixing it when i get a chance so ill take some pics next time i get up north.

Yeah NEVER oil the shoes but you can oil the bushing.
