2019 Build Off Winner!
Ok, so my HiPo is kind of leaving me wondering.
It's 64 degrees Fahrenheit out at the moment, and I was just test firing the Hothead.
It'll start right up, first pull and rev eagerly. At idle sometimes the exhaust will have a slight grayish tinge to it.
And when I revved it up earlier(first time in a little while), it blew out a puff of white exhaust. It dissipated pretty quickly, despite the low air movement in the yard. I put my hand behind the header, and it didn't blow out anything.
I pulled the spark plug, and you can see the pics as to what it looks like, It smelled gassy.
You can also see the picture into the cylinder, looks Ok to me, mostly carbon. And I included a shot of the inside of the header just because you can't really have too many pics with a question like this.
Oil level is about the same as when I filled the engine after the rod upgrade.
It was running too rich for a little bit after the carb fix, so that would explain the carbon.
The engine hasn't seen a ton of hours since I upgraded the rod. Some of you may remember that it had some cylinder scoring, but it was comparatively mild. I believe the (intake?) valve guide is a bit worn, I think I remember a bit of side to side play.
The oil control ring is oriented wrong at the moment, since it's the 3 piece ring and it escaped me at the time not to line up the different component rings.
The black/gray smoke is most likely the carbon/deposits burning off, but that still leaves the occasional white puff in question. After I let it sit and cool back down after the run where it blew the white puff, I started it up again, and there was no white smoke, just a hint of gray.
So what do you guys think? Oil? Carbon? Old deposits burning off? Unburnt fuel? Something else?
