I finished the muffler and installed it in on the engine. When I tried to start the engine, it started for 15 seconds then died.
I disassembled carburetor, cleaned it and put it back on. then started the engine again and everything works fine. Turns out the muffler is quieter than the stock one when the engine is idling, but when I hit the pedal, it pops a bit, but it'll do the job.
I don't know about the performance since the go kart isn't finished and I didn't have the chance of testing its basic performance.
I'll try putting a video soon (have to install winzip to compress the file)

It pops because you do not have adequate back pressure. I.E. your pipes are too big.

I used larger pipes in order not to create any restriction

would putting a sleeve in the external pipe to lower its diameter solve the problem?

Yes. You are now discovering why good mufflers cost so much. The engineering and research to develop a muffler is engine specific. There is a fine balance between too little air flow and too much that has to be foun for an ideal exhaust system.

Too little air flow creates a choke, or restrictive, system, killing power. Too much air flow removes the essential back pressure, causing popping or even engine damage.

Any time you change your exhaust or intake, you change the air fuel ratio. Popping usually indicates a lean situation which is certain death for any engine.

Now, even putting a step down cone on the end of your pipe will assist in creating back pressure. Nice thing about a cone is you can start off with a very over restrictive system, and by trimming away parts of the cone you open the system up until you find the perfect setup with the most power and no popping
