hi all,
i am new and all and don't really know if i posted in the right place.
i am planning on building a full-suspension kart/buggy as a school project but I have some questions.
so here it goes..
Can a semi-automatic transmission taken from an old honda 70-80cc be used with a larger engine maybe 125-200cc ??

Well an old Norton, BSA, Triumph would, but good luck finding one for a reasonable decent price, as they are highly sought after.
here is a Norton Matchless gearbox http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Gearbox-Transmission-Norton-Matchless-AJS-91-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eb69403e8QQitemZ200631649256QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
and
here is a Triumph Preunit gearbox http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Triumph-Preunit-Transmission-Gearbox-Norton-BSA-TR6-T10-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eb6981d6bQQitemZ200631917931QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

But it wouldn't surprise me any if they for no less than $400 to $600

Harley 5 speed http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HARLEY-DAVIDSON-5-SPEED-TRANSMISSION-COMPLETE-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2a12601544QQitemZ180696913220QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Harley 45 series http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/45-complete-transmission-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2eb698975aQQitemZ200631949146QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

So as you see this rout may not be the way you want to go
You might be better off finding an old air cooled 4 stroke bike and using the entire motor and trans off it.

Also I do know that peerless makes some automatic riding mower transmission such as the 205-024C but they are high as crap too and made for vertical shaft engines.
perhaps even look into snowmobile engines

The GY6 motor that's on a lot of Chinese ATVs, scooters
and go-carts, has a CVT Transmission that is like Comet
torque converter, the GY6 CVT has a driver and a driven
pulley, both are removable, but from what I have seen
they fit onto a shaft that has splines.

BTW the GY6 is a clone of a Honda motor.

thanks for the input guys really helped a lot. as you can notice i am not familiar with engines and transmissions and how they work.
for now i am trying to get the picture of what i can used and how to do it (building and making a kart work) before going to the drawing board.

I saw this engine http://maltapark.com/item.asp?ItemID=938055 and was wondering if it was good to used on a kart. the seller state it is a 9hp and runs.

Yes, it is possible but it's one of those if you have to ask how then you probably can't do it kinda things.

There's a few ways you can do it.

First way is to remove the flywheel cover and flywheel, machine an adapter to fit a sprocket there. Remove the barrel, head, conrod piston ect and make a blanking plate to go there. You'l have a fair bit of vibration but nothing too horrible.

Another way is the same as above but machine up a bar to go in place of the crank, this way you don't get the horrible imbalance.

It's all kind pointless though, a CT70 engine would be just as quick as a 6.5hp clone anyway.

You should get them to send you some pics and dimensions of that 9HPs shaft, other than that it looks okay.

Thanks

.

yip you're spot on there. I've been keeping my eyes pealed for a g box to match a matchless g80 engine i have. They use the same gear boxes as verious triumphs etc.

over here they seem to sell for $200-800.

$200 = a box full of parts from a box that some guy took apart 30 years ago, which may or may not = a complete gearbox :D
