I am a ( selective ) motor sports fan. NHRA, Indy car, and most any kind of power boat racing. Follow them a lot. NASCAR, not so much. I've been to live NASCAR races, and in person they're very exciting. Just don't watch it on TV. Now for a SEMI hijack. I have been a HUGE fan of unlimited hydroplane racing for at least
60 years. They race in San Diego ( near where I live ) every year. From 1970 until
2000, I never missed a race. All through the 70's and into the early to mid 80's the event would have 70,000 to 80,000 fans crowded into Mission Bay. Then they started running jet turbine engines. They are lighter, about 15% more powerful, and much more dependable than a full house V-12 aircraft engine. The boats are faster, more nimble and almost SILENT. Lucky if 10 to 15 thousand people show up. Boat counts went from 12-13 to 6-7. I can't believe NASCAR doesn't realize, at best, it's wasting it's time and money on this, and maybe singing it's death certificate. Hearing a 17 or 22 hundred cubic inch supercharged Rolls Griffin or
Rolls Merlin injesting as much Nitrous Oxide as possible screaming down the straight, there was a reason they called them Thunder Boats. Careful what you wish for, NASCAR. Engine noise is a lot more important than officials realize.
