Your steering looks quite a bit different than what is on mine.

i figured it might. if your steering shaft is made to be removable, it should have a bolt/nut from the bottom holding on the gear/sprocket. with those fenders (they look one piece) it should be removable. otherwise you will have to cut the steering shaft. i would say cut it at the bottom, if neccessary. you may have to get another shaft. nortehrn sells one that has a splined coupler to mount the steering wheel. i would mount the sprocket to the splined plate and weld a new plate for the steering wheel. depending on clearance of course.

The steering shaft doesn't have a gear/sprocket setup on the bottom. There is a piece of steel maybe 3" long that looks to be welded to the bottom of the steering shaft. That piece has a hole in it which the steering linkage is connected to. About 2" above that piece is a bracket welded to the frame with a hole in it that the shaft runs through. On either side of the bracket is a pin that seems to be pressed into the steering shaft. This keeps the shaft in place.

It's not a good design and I thought it was extremely basic when I first seen this truck. Sounds like normal steering setups are a lot nicer than this one.

for the most part, they are the same. i was referencing atvs. because they do have removable steering shafts. can you take a pic of the steering?

if it is like your drawing, the steering wheel comes off with its mount. right? by this, it looks like you could use a pin-punch to drive out one of the pins. the upper one.

I quickly looked at the steering wheel and it looked like there might be some set screws in the hub of the steering wheel.

I'm really thinking about just scraping this setup and replacing it? Is there a better setup that I could use?

the aforementioned northern unit. whoops, seems they don't carry it anymore. it sounds like it is a removable unit. unless you are willing to fab up a new one, i would augment this one. is your steering shaft twisted or bent? no real reason (functionality reason) to replace if it is good. you might remove that upper pin, and get one for a tractor that has a sort of bail handle that locks over it to keep it in place. it's entirely up to you.

I`m favoring the roll bar more and you could even run the the back two bars as far back as possible like on baja trucks. as far as lights I would go with some after market boltons like small KCs and a baja front bar. I made one for an s10 outa black gass pipe and it was super stout and looked awesome. I`d use something lighter on yours though. i think you have enough side wall you could be okay without a suspension for a while but it would be nice. that things awesome either way

now thats a cool toy! I think it looks great just like that, if you'r budy has loads of atv parts why not mimic that with suspention the big motor,rollcage & leave that one whole, when you'r little one hits 16 he might be able to trade it for a new car, but not if you butcher it, I've never seen one & that thing is sick! with a 6.5 it should be pretty fast now, no ? what ever you do I'd like to see, the pins in your steering collum are probablly pressed in, try putting a nut onone side & a small bar (that'll fit in the pin's hole & squeeze with pliers or channel locks & see if the pin moves, the pin could be tapered so try to see if it looks skinnier on one end, if all goes well you should push the pin into the center of the nut

How are people bending these if they don't have a tube bender? I have a friend who has a bending machine but it pushes the inside of the tube in on radius to make the bend and it doesn't look that nice. I'd like the tube to stay consistent through the bend if possible.

All tubing benders do that, that's just the way it is.

Well, you can always fill the pipe with sand, and cap the ends before you put it in the bender. The sand will keep it from deforming. Just don't hit it with any heat ..... might get messy.

you'r stearing shaft once you remove the top & bottom pin's & the stearing wheel, the shaft will slide out the bottom, the pin's keep it from dropping out the bottom, the only thing stopping this would be a stearing wheel mount that's been welded on but it shouldn't be
