That wild hair up my a$$ just wouldnt quit... so i'm getting a BIG BLOCK engine for my golf cart!

I've got a guy bringing me a 16hp Vanguard tomorrow!
I CAN BARELY WAIT TO GET IT INSTALLED!!!!

and i'm sure that it'll be quite a bit of fab work involved to get it to work... but that amount of hp is worth it.

So it has begun, I ripped out the old engine and ALL of its wiring harnesses and pretty much anything associated with it in preparation for the Vanguard 16hp

I decided not to try to fab up all the mounts, but instead i contacted Vegas Carts and ordered the motor mounts, the original ones were all torn. the engine was pretty much only held in place by the belt and a safety cable on the front left corner that kept it from shifting too far back....

anyhow, ordered a new clutch for it, so i will be able to idle and shift from f to r without killing the engine, ordered a new belt, an engine cradle, new air filter, a key switch that i can start an kill the engine from.. i should be rolling by next week.

:funnypost::thumbsup: Nice!! While some may give you grief because you ordered the factory parts, I personally think it comes down to what you feel is a fair price for same, and what you value your time to be worth. Also, in this case, I get the impression that having it up and running ASAP so you can continue to use it is also a big consideration as well....

Please take and upload as many photo's as you can; this is the first swap of this type (that I can remember) since I became a member, and I think it would be good to have an in depth build log that we can use for reference for anyone down the road that wants to consider such a project.

:thumbsup::cheers2::popcorn: Pat

thank you.
there is another source for parts that is WAY overpriced, i'm talking $180 just for the engine cradle for 4 pieces of bent flat bar. Vegas carts is the underdog and they are offering a solid metal plate with the holes predrilled for $60... c'mon now.. i couldnt fabricate a perfectly cut engine cradle for $60.... i dont have a cnc... lol

anyhow, i decided that i didnt want to reinvent the wheel and like you mentioned, i'd rather get it done right and enjoy it!
lol.
I'll take more pictures!

So here is the cart minus an engine

uploadfromtaptalk1386827564294.jpg

Ill bypass the rear governor and connect the linkages directly to the engine.

Hopefully the parts should arrive this weekend and I can be up and running soon.. but with my luck it'll take 2 weeks!

No one wants a yamaha 280cc engine? hell, i'll take $100 for it..
the clutch is worth double that....
:D

anyhow, i decided to bench test the engine while i'm waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive and i found that the carb was not working. it was completely gunked up, i took it all apart, carb cleaner, compressed air, and a needle. put it back together and it fired up.
man is it loud with open headers!
lol.
i also purchased an exhaust off a yamaha 450 atv, but i'll get the exhaust figured out last.

as of now the engine fires up and runs really strong.

I soldered two diodes for the coils to be able to ground them out to kill the engine.

just waiting on the mounting plate and clutch to arrive hopefully this week.

I really should start a new thread.. but i'm too lazy.

Progress on the engine is stalled as I'm waiting for the engine mount plate that I had ordered from Vegas Carts, they are CNC-ing a plate for me, they already sent me one but the engine sat too high, so they will redesign a drop one...

i could use the one they sent me now if I were to just weld it to the bottom of the frame, but i already spent over $100 on new rubber engine mounts that i want to use..

I also ordered an Equus Tachometer and inductive pick up.

got the clutch on, its a comet.

And since i dont have enough on my plate I decided that it needs a true full roll cage.. not some bs brush guard

1 1/2" schedule 40 pipe

The front will wrap around the cowl and then up and over

This is as far as i've gotten.. wife doesnt want me out welding during the holidays.... grrr... but she's ok with me raking the leaves....
