I bought a murray killowatt kart about 6 weeks ago. First thing i noticed is how weak and sloppy the steering setup was. Here are the pictures of what i ended up with.

Before-

After-

You will see the locking collar on the shaft, along with a bearing under it. I used the bearing to prevent the collar from rubbing on the bracket. Not sure if i needed it, but the less friction the better.
I cut the bracket and used the lower of the two holes for the steering shaft. Just had to drill it out to match the diameter of the shaft i bought.

The next picture is of the pitman arm which the tie rods attach to. You can also see i used a nylon sleeve on the shaft so it isnt metal on metal, again for less friction. The space was limited, but it operates perfect and doesnt rub at all. The 2 mounting bolts you see can actually be flipped around so only the head of the bolt is facing out, giving more space for the tie rods. Also notice how the bracket is mounted towards the inside of the kart after modification. The angle it creates is perfect for the pitman arm clearance.

Cost about $25 for the shaft, pitman arm, bearing, collars and a few hrs for design and fabrication.

Edit: Sorry about the pictures, just got them back up.

Great job. I only have 1 question; The locking collar will prevent the shaft from sliding down but what prevents it from sliding up? You have about an inch of shaft free below the plate; if you pull back on the steering wheel, wouldn't it slide up?

Actually no, i have a second collar toward the top of the shaft under the mount and steering wheel, so it keeps the shaft from sliding up as well, just never posted that pic.....lol

Here you go.

And there is another nylon bushing to prevent metal on metal up on this as well.
Disregard those 2 screws, they are not related to the steering....

Good job! I can't remember who it was on the forum (might have been you), but they were looking to replace the steering setup on their killowat, but could not find the parts. This would be a great idea for them (if it wasn't you....)

No problem. I have other pics if you need them and just ask if you have any questions.

Hey realfast89gt,

I am new to the forum and could use some advice. I was given a Murray kilowatt go kart and need to replace the steering sector. I see in your post that you replaced the steering sector. Unfortunately I am unable to see your photos. If possible I would love to see how you repaired the steering sector. I will also be replace the axle. Then hopefully we will have a good go kart for the kids.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
