Wow, I'm confused.
Purchased rolling frame go kart. 14" overall diameter rear wheels, 72 tooth sprocket, #40 (I just recently figured out) came with chain to match.
Had a 5hp Tecumseh we hoped to resurrect and use.
Purchased a Max Torque clutch for it but then figured out the 12 tooth sprocket on the clutch was for a #35 chain.
Emailedd Jim D. at Max Torque about what to do. He thinks go TC
His words:
To make the switch all you need is a drum and sprocket --10tooth #41 sprocket and the drum most likely for a 3/4" crankshaft which is 4 horse power and above up to 7 hp, 8hp is a 1" crankshaft. You can look on the internet and see what a complete clutch cost (e-bay) and you can call Comet Kart Sales 317-462-3414 and order just the drum and sprocket from them.

So, help me figure out my best move. We just want a little kart to bomb around in and tinker with, throwing $200 more at it probably will stall the project but if that what it takes so be it.
I'm really lost now.
TIA!!!

cool, I will just try to get the right clutch then (aka correct sprocket/chain #40) have to live with 10 tooth vs. 12 I guess? Maybe I can just get the sprocket part. I bought the clutch full retail at a shop (which I never do because I'm cheap) but I'll go back to them with it and see what they say. I don't expect them to take it back since I unpackaged it and put it on the drive shaft (never ran it of course).
I've seen just the sprockets for sale, no idea if they're interchangeable. I was going to just replace the sprocket on the clutch that was already on the engine but shop said no can get just sprocket (which is wrong because I've seen them for sale).
Thanks then, will leave the TC issue for now and just try to see what we can do with proper clutch.

I would buy a whole new clutch for $26 bucks befor I changed the sprocket for $20. Sell your un-needed new one.

P.S. Put your location in your profile. Someone else might want that clutch!

Try returning it first. Any local shop worth a dang will accept it unpackaged, but unused. Clean whatever grease or dirt may me on it, and tell them you didn't use it due to the wrong chain pitch, which is the truth.

okay, will try that tomorrow. Good guys there. I won't hold it against them if I ordered the wrong clutch (although I probably won't buy another from them, just because they are quite a bit cheaper elsewhere). They are also ordering in a pile of Tecumseh carb parts!

so the 10 tooth #40 sprocket won't fit in a drum designed for a 12 tooth #35 I take it? Probably cheaper to just get a whole new clutch then just a drum and sprocket but we'll see.

Then there is the question of performance with 14" wheels and a 5HP motor and clutch, will it get up and move or not? I guess that's why the TC is recommended.

Shop has strict policy of no return on kart parts (don't blame them there). I just bought the one with a sprocket for a #40 chain since they had it there. $36 isn't too bad. Now I have two clutches. Time to stop spending $$ on bits I don't need.

More info needed: Carb was off implies it's now on; what parts were missing? Don't worry about the governor linkages unless you want the governor. Is the plug damp or wet?
