Been pricing stuff out for a reseal and potential rebuild on the Vanguard. Got the tractor off the trailer today, started up for me after some cranking. Gas in the tank smells of varnish, but still potent enough to at least go bang. Quit a bit of oil seepage and build up around the PTO cover. Engine has 758 hours on it per the working hour meter on the tractor.

Not sure if an oil pump is still available. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace it to guarantee a long service life. It's probably at a 50% life left, maybe 75%. Not sure what the engine life is on one of these 1500 to 2000 hours maybe?

So I learned something new today.

Was on a job exploring for sewer and water lines in a undeveloped subdivision laid out in the 60s. No asbuilt maps. Trying to locate the utilities. Had a vac truck to dig holes where I said, looking for the lines.
My boss is there in the morning and was using dousing rods. He marked the lines.
Had utility locate come out earlier and they marked a little but not all. Lazy.
As I was standing round like a good foreman I decided to try the rods.
First time. Didn't get anything.
Took a few minutes and tried again. Hey look it worked. The wires crossed over the line.
I tried over known lines we found.
Then went to where we thought they were and I was getting crossings at the same line.
Cool
Went the rest of the day repeatedly getting results.
Some of the holes were over 10 feet deep.

Happy Saturday everyone. Enjoying coffee here in the kitchen (and enjoying it better than ever since using an Aeropress).

What’s everyone got planned for today?

Just finished my breakfast and coffee, then some yard work early, mess around in the garage with some projects and then the Michigan-USC game at 7:30. :coffee:🏈

That's a good neighbor! I was able to mow, do leaves, get pumpkins, hay, fall decorations for the porch, etc... I was even able to do my neighbors leaves and mow there lawn.

Now just drinkin some beer and bourbon tinkering with RC's in garage while watching football. Perfect weather here today. Nice and cooler in the low 60's and partly cloudy.

I’m finally at the end stages of this fix-the-mower project. Life gets in the way but it helps if you actually get the gasket kit in the mail….:rolleyes:The throttle kit however arrived in about 5 days, no issues.

It feels like I have a bit of clean-engine-OCD after a moderate repair like this so the bulk of my time has been (wasted) poking, prodding and scraping the cooling fins clear of baked-on debris. A small chunk of "coal" (baked oil/grass/dirt) fell off the cylinder head from somewhere, probably from a tight passage between the valve stem gallery or the pushrod gallery and the rest of the head. I guess it pays to inspect this area from time to time and you only have to remove the blower shroud, plus a clean(er) engine will help you pinpoint oil leaks, blown head gasket, etc. Today will be the day it finally gets a drink ⛽

Here’s the co-conspirator that took a good engine down for the count:
EDIT: that screw had to be pried off a little. Probably could have used my fingernails but I chewed them all off.

This engine is about 24 years old and gets untold hours per mowing season. An hour meter would've been nice but I will make an estimate later on. The iron cylinder liner still has its cross-hatching and shows no signs of scoring that you'd typically see in a Kool Bore....amazing. 🤯

I'm waiting on a parts kit for a Walbro LMT carb. The riding mower it was installed on was fine until it started suddenly racing. It would not throttle down even with the throttle on "turtle". I was puzzled--checked the governor linkage for damage then consulted Youtube University. Found a video and then I just knew what it was. 😬 The throttle valve (butterfly) had disconnected from the throttle shaft. That means wide open throttle without governor control. The two screws holding it on had backed off and the valve ended up lodged in the intake....

The above reveal is a horror show if you think about it. One or both throttle plate screws bouncing around in the cylinder but even worse, the engine racing out of control. Luckily it had a load on it at the time (blades engaged) and a careful rider (me).

Yes, the top of the piston is dinged up a little from the screw bouncing around (for a few revolutions) but not enough to impair function. What I think happened was, one screw was lost a long time ago and exited through the exhaust valve. The rest of the time, the one remaining screw has been slowly working itself loose until it finally exited stage left but stayed for the show. ☹️. Makes me wonder if the throttle plate screws should not only be loctited in place but also staked in with a small punch.
