I think the book was written in 1910s, the movie was in the 60s. There is a movie about the author and Disney making the movie. I want to check that out.

Disney has always favored "adaptation" of old written works over anything actually creative, although in recent years theve take to re-dapting their adapted animated works. Pretty much every single Disney Classic has a darker origin elsewhere much earlier... Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping beauty, Snow White, Jungle book, Besuty and the Beast, Cinderella, etc.

Beauty in the beast is actually believed to be a twist on historic fact involving Royalty with Hereditary Hypertrichosis although the country of origin escapes me now.
