Is this bolt the only thing that holds the steering wheel to the steering shaft? The center of the wheel is just molded plastic not three bolts like I was expecting. It goes all the way through to the other side and I almost rounded it trying to get it off before:mad:

If I'm seeing this correctly..
it's the famous Kelch Co steering wheel, isn't it (Manco default three spoke)?

in which case: yes.. the through bolt is the only thing meant to hold it in place.
BUT since it's a mild steel core... rust adds another pretty good "fixture" ;)

PB blaster the shirt out of it and it'll come loose eventually
(mine did.. with some percussive persuasion for example;))

I still say he should sell it.....for the good of mankind.

Gee, I was thinking you should be banned, again, permanently this time, for the good of mankind.

This is the kind of comment that we don't need on DIYGK. If you don't have anything constructive to say, then please don't reply to threads. He is here to learn. We were all noobs at one stage

...

I couldn't get my steering wheel off either kart.

Such a struggle foiled even you, the mighty Whitetrashrocker?

It’s not supposed to happen that way. We veteran “wrenchers” always win in the end. Say it isn’t so!

Now I am depressed.

He was trying to push it off, instead of pulling it off!

Seriously, tho, it's something people often overlook. If you can get movement.. beat it back and forth, applying penetrating oil

I knew it was rusted on. I didn't want to mangle the ever so popular and hard to find Manco steering wheel.
It wasn't broke so why fix it?

well it has a nice steel insert:
manco-steering-wheel_bottom.jpg
rest a wrench against that, and give it a whack or two..
(after removing the through bolt of course)

Allow me to ask another question:
why keep rust on a restored kart when it only takes a bit of patience to remove it?

Sid you know I didn't restore my karts. They were in decent shape and my intent was to have yard bombers not kartshow trophy winners. Out here in the rocks nothing stays nice for long. I'm tearing the bedliner paint off the bottoms of the frames. The steering wheel was the least of my concerns.

No worries, I don't care much myself :D
I'd still add a few ounces of oil (penetraiting or other if you like)
just to stop the rust from eating away the tiny section of the steering shaft that holds onto the steering wheel.
since in the end.. it's still rust eating away the steel eventually ;)
and the steering shaft by nature has a pretty large hole in it (for the through bolt)
and what's left isn't exactly beefy in the first place.

And if it's ugly or not is less important than if the steering shaft cracks or not,
especially in rough terrain
(unsuspended bumps nicely transmit into the steering wheel, don't they?)

Again, I am not saying you must, not even saying you should..

..I'm just saying I don't see no harm in removing rust :D

it's not even restoration.. it's closer to maintenance really
(one bolt, a quick lick with the sandpaper and a squirt of oil, right?)

Again your the wisdom king.
Yes rust is cancer but luckily out here things don't rust away. Just a nice surface oxidation. It's dry and arid. I pick up scrap metal that's been laying in the dirt for decades, take a wire brush to it and it's brand new.
I'm lucky like that.

Now my poor Jeep that spent it's life up north has holes rotting the body and frame underneath.

And it's not so much the steering wheel that takes the abuse on a solid frame kart. It's the axles and frame itself that tend to be the problem.

Every one's different in how they do things. That's the beauty in custom toys.

Well I got the bolt out with a ton of pb blaster, anyone have a tip for getting it off the steering shaft? I know it's frozen

Lots of pb blaster. Turn the kart frame upside down to let gravity help. Then use a drift punch and hammer.

No, no no. Randy H says you don't need gravity. Capillary action does it all. In fact he may believe gravity works against you in these cases. Who knows? Just squirt it up in there and hope for the best.

:cheers2:
