I got a hold of a 10 hp Subaru generator motor.

I am a big time suby fanatic. I have a 2005 STi and a 2005 baja turbo 5 speed. I have self tuned both of them. The baja puts down 318ft/lbs of torque while the STI is putting down 450+ ft/lbs of torque. I fabricate/mod/mechanic everything on my Subies.

I came across this engine on CL and offered the guy cash for 50% of what he was asking and I got it.

Thoughts? Was planning on a margay/live axle style frame. Was thinking of fabbing everything in schedule 20 stainless. One goal I have is to run this cart on E85 if at all possible. My STI runs on it and it is pure evil for torque.

I just got a brand new Miller 180 autofeed 230v welder. It welds so awesome on every type of metal. Really excited about this project.

I would like this to be done by August at the latest in time for the West Coast Subaru show.

I want to be able to drive the cart right up ramps into the bed of the baja and use the tailgate extender to hold it snug in the bed for transport.

Generator motors very often have a tapered shaft, rather than the more go-kart friendly 1" shaft with 1/4" keyway. Which does yours have?

Do you have some design ideas in mind yet? Post some pics of similar karts. We like pictures! Lots of newbs (new to karting folk) view this site, not all of us know what a margay kart looks like (myself included). We like to see step by step how other people build their karts and resolve their issues. If you get stumped, then we offer advice - some good, and some not so good. Lol.

Thanks for the tips. Once I get the non working generator parts off of it I will let you know. Where would I source a crankshaft for it? It is a 2006 coleman 5000 watt gene with a 10hp subaru motor.

As for design ideas I definitely want to use this frame idea/style http://www.buildasupergokart.com/

I'm really looking forward to this! Those Robin Subaru engines are amazing, surprises me how rarely I see them used. The car is pretty sweet too, my dad has a 2010 WRX with sway bars, performance muffler, and upgraded brakes.

Mount the engine to your right, this one is compact enough to do that so you will get a shorter wheelbase and better handling. I would also ditch the stainless tubing unless you really want the shiny aspect.

Not sure about the E85, you would have to look into some of the performance parts (I can't find the site right now, but it does exist!). Fitting it in the bed shouldn't be a problem, although keep those measurements in mind while designing.

For a new crankshaft you need to find your engines model number, and search for it at robinamerica.com. Once you find out what model engine you can get a parts manual and then find the crank part #. Finally you can use that part number at a place like manddmower.com. Be warned the crank will probably be expensive, you might want to look into having your current one machined. Some carbs on generators do not have ilde circuits, so they will only run at WOT.

P.S. Nice welder!!!!

I was thinking of machining an adapter for it if needs be. This is all pending on the fact that it is a tapered shaft though.

I have a co-worker that has a bunch of spare go cart parts in his garage that he is going to let me have today.

As per the stainless steel, it is an aesthetic thing for me, pride you could say. Also I have a huge pet peeve about rust. Look at the front view of the kart frame near the pedals and you will see what I mean. I hate that crap.

As per the motor location I agree with having it sit to the right. Kind of like Rob Dyrdeks turf tire cart.
I still want to make that superkart fame though just in case I come across a honda 600 motorcycle engine. HAHA!

Pictures to come.

Todays battle that never got finished was pulling the rotor off of the motor.

I also picked up some old school go cart parts that I can use as a reference for when I am building mine.

I decided to go full stainless so I will be purchasing parts as funds allow to get this build done with.

I still have to finish pulling the rest of the rotor off of the output shaft of the motor.

Looks to be a 7/8" shaft for the output though. Will know for sure once I get the last section pulled off.

The motor is a Subaru #EX300SE5211 with s/n 1098493.

It does have a throttle on it and it does idle as well.

I finally got the last section of the shaft off and it is tapered for sure.

I will have to fabricate an adapter. Should not be too hard.
