Hello all,

Here's my latest project. Since my wife, kids, and brothers were giving me a hard time about tearing apart a "perfectly good" go kart (see (PROJECT) Street Dingo thread), I picked up this one for wrenchin'.

It's a '63-'68 wide-hoop Rupp Dart. I found it on CL locally. A kid had it but needed to sell to finance his first car. It has a clone on it that runs good, drum brake, and about 90% of the hardware is original. I picked it up because the frame was straight, and with the exception of one of the motor mounts and some other small brackets, it wasn't too molested.

Of course then by brother borrowed it. About two weeks after buying it, he went to start it and the throttle was stuck wide-open. It went flying across the yard and hit the neighbors concrete foundation. There goes my mint frame. Just some minor damage, though. I found a body guy who straightened out a friends boat trailer after an accident. Sounds like he can put my frame on the rack and straighten it out.

The carnage:

See how this wheel is straight?

Now here's the bent side

Not too bad, but bad enough. Here's a front bumper the kid added. I'll be changing this out with a more correct nerf bar.

Boogered motor mount. I have a complete (but also bent) Rupp Dart frame with a good mount that I think I'll swap onto here.

Other mount is good, though.

So here's the plan. Short term is to strip it down, get it to the sandblasters, and get the frame straightened. My plan was to set it up with twin 2-strokers, but I'm also considering the motor I had ready for the Dingo-a vintage twin-cylinder Chaparral snomobile engine. I'm leaning towards the two motors, just to keep it somewhat original.

This is not a restoration. I'll be using parts I had for the Dingo, and the motors won't be some rare McCullochs. Maybe a newer motor, like a Stihl or Homelite (any suggestions?). Any suggestions, comments, etc., are greatly appreciated.

Next up: Strip 'er down to the frame.

Hey thats a really cool old kart there Eddie.

Sounds like you already know it would have a lot more potental value with a pair of vintage 2 strokes but that Chaparral sounds like fun too.

Thanks Anderkart. Yeah, I know I'd be more valuable restored, but I'm looking for something I can actually use. If I get all wierdo on the restoration, I'd never ride it.

Tore into the kart tonight.

Got into that front nerf bar that was driving me crazy. If you look at the frame on the far side where the bracket from the spindle mount meets the main rail, you'll see a gold color. That's the original gold metalflake under the green! Pretty sweet color!

Special thanks to my neighbor Mike for coming down and giving me a hand. Thanks Mike!

Some more grinding and it's off to the frame shop and the sandblaster. I'll keep you posted.

Finally an update! Got the frame back from the frame shop (thanks again Dan!). Straight as an arrow. Also took out a little belly in the main rails. Looks great.

Also decided to follow in a few other members footsteps and go with a Lawn Boy Duraforce 2-stroke as my powerplant of choice. Actually, twin Duraforces. Picking up one tonight I found on CL and using my current L-B mower for the second. My wife doesn't exactly like mowing the lawn with a tempermental two-stroker, so I'll replace it in the Spring with a 4 stroke mower.

Stay tuned, more updates (with lots of pics) to follow over the next several days and weeks.

Made some progress today on the frame. Hacked off that boogered mount. Took about 30 lbs off the frame.

Now I just gotta cut a motor mount off the old frame to replace it.

Bad news. 2 of the main rails were pretty rusted under the mount. Take a look.

Looks like I'll have to do some more metal fab when it gets back from the sandblaster. It's not nearly as bad as it looks. I can probably just section out the bad and replace with new without taking the frame apart.

While I was at it, I made the new front nerf bar. Cut off some tubing from the scrap kart.

Cut them to length, welded them together, fishmouthed the ends, and attached it to the frame. Viola!

Not much left of the 1st frame.

This is my 1st attempt at welding/fabricating, so let me know if you see I'm screwing something up.

I have a couple more supports I want to add before it's shipped out to be blasted. I'll take care of those tomorrow so I can send it out on Monday.
