i recently got the go kart bug, and im very pleased i did... i purchased to karts in one week.... one is a Manco Dingo frame (wifes) with a 212 hemi on it , TAV torque converter set up, 9 tooth on clutch and 60 on axle sprocket

Mine is a frame im not to sure of.. also has a 212 but its not the hemi, regular clutch set up with 10 tooth on clutch and 60 on the axle sprocket also....

now for mine, since i have to se faster than the wife lol... i ordered a "stage 2" performance kit which included a bored .650 "race" carb with a .035 main jet and 140 e-tube, cone style filter and adapter, and a new pipe and muffler....

wifes so far is getting a "race" carb bored .615 with .038 main jet and 140 e-tube also, planning on getting a pipe and air filter set up also for this kart....

my questions are , how can i get better top speeds on both without doing major internal mods to the engines? i know you can have 20hp but if its limited to 3600rpms its going to same speed as a 5hp with the same rpm max, so my basic question is is bypassing the governor the same as taking it out of the motor? and how much rpm's would i really gain doing this? i know i'd need a billet flywheel and not wanting to get one as the are as much or more then the 212cc engine itself..

and also im looking to get knobbier tires for my cart...they have lawn mower tires on them, im looking to get dingo or yerfdog style tall meaty rear tires any suggestion on sizes ? im on 6" rims right now but would buy bigger if needed, how do i determain the center hole bore and max width i can put on my kart?

Bypassing the governor is an almost guaranteed way to toast one of those engines. You MUST remove the internals.

And NO NO NO!!!! You do NOT need a billet flywheel!

Welcome

Firstly, DO NOT bypass the governor. You want to remove the internals of the governor too. If you don't the governor internals can come loose and trash your engine. You HAVE to remove everything or risk blowing up the engine.

Secondly, getting taller tyres will be like gearing higher. This will decrease torque, but increase speed (if your clutch can handle it). You are already at the limit for gearing on both your karts, so I would not get taller tyres without changing the gear ratio

^ I dont?? i've heard that you would need to get one....

and also about the clutch... how do i figure out what it can hold up to?? or how/where do i get a stronger one?

and recommendations on changing gearing?

how hard is removing the governor? and how much rpm's would i really gain?

You heard wrong...it's been pretty well established here that that's an unecessary expense...as no one has reported a problem...

Removing the governor takes you from about 3600 to right around 5000 or so with stock springs.....You can get more rpms with stronger springs, but....this where you DO need billet ....as in connecting rod...as the stock one might fail, but you STILL don't need a billet flywheel at that point!

It's not really difficult to remove the governor....just Google it up!

We can't advise you on gear ratios until you count clutch teeth, axle sprocket teeth, measure current tire height and considered new tire height ,as well a general guesstimate on vehicle +driver weights , and terrain you are planning to use the kart on

My governor is removed, gone, completely from my engine.

With a Comet 30 series, 9 tooth jackshaft, and 60 tooth axle, with 16" tires, I top out at roughly 35 mph. According to my silly little induction tach the valves float at about 5,500. It took me about fifteen minutes to get the stupid gear out of the crank, it required a fair bit of effort, then I took the arm and everything else from the engine, and filled the hole with a 1/4-20 bolt and some JB Weld.

If you want more RPM, the first step is a billet rod, not flywheel. Then valve springs will allow more rev's before float. By then you'll need a new cam to move the powerband up so you can actually achieve the RPM.

But hey, baby steps, you'll get there.

thanks for the info guys... im thinking im just going to buy a new 212 and work on it then when its all ready, slap it on the kart....

That's a solid plan lol, they are affordable enough. I upgraded mine fully before I put it on, and rebuilt my clutch so I could try to minimize teething problems.

I remember pulling my motor apart and adding a billet rod, GXV160 flywheel, 18cc head, and 18lb springs when I pulled the governor. I don't think it broke 4000 rpm! Probably on a smaller kart the revs will be there, but on a full suspension kart like mine it needed a cam to do any good. Even a $25 BSP cam will get some more top end out of a motor for pretty cheap.

Yeah, mine only hit's 5500 downhill lol.

I took all the internal gov parts out of my 212 a year ago and have had no issues running stock fly wheel, springs, etc. I top out at 32 mph on a Murray Explorer with a Comet TC.
