Give this a read:

It is a current engine build, "He Goes All Bob". I mean he hits every possible detail and question. Lots of links and Videos. He is just learning too.
There is also alot of fun BS thrown in there. and don't expect to get to a point.
The point is there is the most info you could want in one place. Even his mistakes and learning currrve.
What I have learned so far, is that many things go into a perfectly tuned engine. Also engines are tuned for a purpose.
1/4 mile?
Street Engine?
Gearing, Tire Size, Carburetor, Jetting, Camshaft Lift, Camshaft Duration, Camshaft Intake Valve Closing Timing, Compression, Intake and Exhaust Flow Rate, Valve Size, Octane Rating, and a number of other things all go into a perfectly tuned engine.
I've also learned that flow testing equipment and dyno testing is required to get it perfect.
Best most of us can do is get better. I'm trying, based off others previous work, some independant research, and a lot of help from here to get more than 15 HP and around 6000 RPM max.
I've probably done enough research on my kart engine to try to build a high performance V-8? LOL
