Let’s find out if these washers will work as needle shims.

Well the washers fit perfectly.

Problem is I can't add/subtract.
Middle clip position plus a shim is richer than the middle position. It sputtered badly at 1/2 throttle. It had already sputtered with the clip in the middle position so this test just reinforced what I believed before.

I tried the 2nd position plus the shim. The sputter improved, but was still there (barely). It was better than the middle position and MUCH better than the middle position plus shim.

I didn't notice any sputter with the clip in the second position without the shim.
Nor did I noticed any sputter with the clip in the top position.
Until I have any reason to change it (like when I try to tune the main jet), I'm going to call the 2nd clip position (from top) the best.

I'll add the plug pictures from the 2nd clip position plus shim, 1/2 throttle test soon.
This plug doesn’t look rich, but the engine behaves as if I am a bit rich and runs better with a leaner clip position.

So quick summary...
Top Left - Top clip position
Top Right - Second clip position
Bottom Left - Second clip position PLUS Shim
Bottom Right - Forth clip position

Didn't notice a performance difference between top and second clip position. Any richer than the second position down and there was a bit of a sputter. What this test seems to show me is that if there is enough color where the standard plug reading pictures tell me I'm good, I'm actually probably too rich. I don't think those pictures are for plug chops. Most of those pictures are for plugs pulled out of engines after standard use for mechanics to make general diagnostics.

Full throttle plug chop

Looks lean to me.
I don’t think there is a visable Fuel ring. Not very much of one anyway. There’s a grey partial ring 1/3 the way around where I’d expect to see the fuel ring. Don’t think that is the fuel ring I’m looking for, but maybe??? I’ll increase the jet size and try again. Not sure which jet is currently installed. Something in the 135 - 145 range.
I’ll try a bigger main jet
Possible that the spark plug is too hot?
Or that there is too much timing?

The color change on the grounding strap looks a bit too close to the threaded part.
I'm using BPR6ES. I think this engine came with a plug that is one heat range colder. I guess I should try stock heat range plug. BP7ES or BPR7ES. Then I can try to tune from the top down. Main jet, then needle clip again.

Was hoping for something that looked like the red arrow.
I got something looking more like the green arrow which is probably marks left from me cutting the threads off and the threaded part spinning.

And now, a moment of silence for that spark plug.

...

It gave it's life, but had so much life left to give.

Well my welding blows goats.
This used to be a good pipe and a spark plug anti fouler.
Drilled a hole in the pipe, cut off the bottom of the non-fouler, tried to weld... it still leaks.

I also have this. Was trying to make something adaptable for 212s and 420s

And instead you made plumbing.

Well I figured I could make a stepped 3/4 to 1" exhaust for the 212 and a straight 1" for the 420. I'd keep the bung in a 1" section and build around that to fit the project frame / engine size. I'm only looking for ball park AF ratios (+/-1). Not sure how an exhaust like this would compare to a real exhaust pipe, meaning not sure how skewed the results would be from using a plumbing pipe to tune, then switching to a real pipe???

I would guess that at engine speeds up to 3-4K, this type of pipe would be as good as any. Above that, when the gasses need a less resistant path, is where it would make a difference. Pure college ruled plumbing speculation on my part.

Duing my WOT plug chop tests, I noticed the dreaded off idle bog. When opening the throttle up too quickly the engine will hesitate and die. Sometimes it will hesitate for a long time, then give a couple bangs, then start to rev.

I assume it goes lean when I open the throttle too fast. I'll play around with the air screw and enrichment circuit (choke) and see if it gets any better by either enriching or leaning the idle mixture. If it gets better with a richer mix, I'll try a bigger pilot jet. I will gladly run with an overly rich pilot jet if it means I can stomp on the pedal when I want to to.

I should have gotten this straightened out the other day. I moved the buggy out of my friend's garage to a place with some room to ride. I planned to tune the carb all day, or until satisfied. I left the TC belt at home. Next time.
