A gasket is a seal between two stationary parts.
A seal is between a stationary part and a moving part.

Gaskets aren't just comprised of cardboard, many different materials are used depending on application. Cork, copper, steel, aluminum, asbestos (and less lethal substitutes), rubber, composites, laminates and many more. Seals are usually synthetic rubbers and substitutes.

what is a cork gasket for?

same as using any other material. Used to be pretty common. Not so much now. My friend recently fitted a cork head gasket to his daewoo:eek:

edit: i was like wtf!!!!!!! when i saw it

A seal is between a stationary part and a moving part.

and i dont get this. What about o-rings on a carb etc? they are a seal. Anything that forms a seal between to things(moving or otherwise) could be called a seal. A gasket is a seal

These were the basic definitions as taught to me many moons ago. Regarding the carb o-rings, you could argue that the mixture screw is a moving part. Or you could argue that the o-ring is in fact, a gasket. O-rings are often used as gaskets. O-rings are often used as seals. O-rings are O-rings.

How do you know someone is truly bored? The great gasket VS seal debate!
