TL;DR. What do y’all use both for storage and haul-age?
Most of my steel GI cans (I must be old fashioned) are “storage only” and stacked (albeit not very well) and don’t move, but the same can as an ammo hauler isn’t the best. Got bulk loose cartridges in M19A1 (the ol .30 cal) and M2A1/M2A2 (the ol .50 cal) and a few PA-108s (Fat 50) cans. Packed with said loose ammo, no cardboard boxes, makes all three a heavy proposition and not so fun for taking to the range. Of course there’s LOTS of loose ammo in these cans. Got 800 rds of fife fife sechs in a .30/M19A1 before I said thats enough.
Do you, hypothetically speaking, “dip out” a few handfulls of cartridges from the storage cans for each pew pew into a temporary ammo box(es) or bag(s) or do you just take the whole can or better yet, use a can with cardboard boxes of ammo inside, no loose (much less weight)? Both I guess, keep cardboard boxes for the range and to better count what you intend to shoot and what you shot, “I shot ___ boxes today”
