hey every one, i read about alot of people trying to use vertical engines, and not alot of success stories. so i was thinking, how about a variation of this, just as an idea found a simple picture just so you guys know what what im talking about when im talking about it.

so basically putting a clutch on the vertical shaft and having it contact the sprocket on the live axle to form a 90 degree transfer of power. maybe regrinding the gears to have better contact?:bannana: :arf: :rolleyes3:  :toetap05: :wai:

what you guys think?

unless you have the gears to do that it'll more than likely cost more than getting a horizontal shaft engine.

As for using a sprocket for a mitered gear it won't work the teeth are too far apart and they will slam into each other and destroy the teeth.

Vertical engine interests me too because you could build a really
low profile center of gravity kart. You can find these gears or gearboxes (angle drives) on old 3 pt hitch mowers, snowblowers,
augers etc. You could also grab the gears out of an old car diff and make a bracket for them. That's what that pic looks like its made from

What about a differential from a some small RWD with independent rear suspension?
Mount it up to a clutch and to the shaft of the engine.
Instant differential and motor.

i have thought about that but i dont know how well the y would hold up to the higher rpm considering most run at 540rpm some 1000rpm and most motors run 3600rpm

Yeah good point, I guess it would have to be placed so it runs
the axle, most axles turn less than 500 rpm

I found a small little gearbox on a Massey lawn tractor. It has the beveled gears like you've got above for running the mower blades, has a built-in gear reduction, and comes in a very small (but heavy) fully enclosed box. The box is thick cast iron, though, and if it were shaved down some, alot of weight would be taken off. i've thought about it, but its another issue on how to hook it up, how to mount it, and its a lot of extra weight.

Not if your looking to go more than 10mph, 65 is also way too much. For the most part that may work but the shifting mechanism in that type of transmission is very weak and will most likely give way pretty quickly. For 65 you could easily just get a RAGB

yea thats the easy route. or rip the engine apart and mod it like i did.

Outboard leg

Anyone thought of trying the gearbox at the end of an old out board leg, off a 10-20HP? got reverse too...fully enclosed running in light gear oil as well, would have to be pretty bullet proof?
Thoughts?

If you are dead set on a vertical shaft configuration look at the drivetrains in most riding lawn mowers. Talk to some folks who race them and they will know what's best to use as far as trannys and ragb's and such. However it's much more cost effective to just get a horizontal shaft motor.

unless its 4-stroke then its not practical

Errr, sorry B man you've lost me there...

:iagree: and easier too, but it expands (or implodes in the brain) coming up with ways of thinking "out side of the square"
