Does it really matter that much? They do the best they can. It take 5 seconds to open the thread, realise its spam, close it. Is that 5 seconds that important? But, I do agree is there anything else that can be done?

Quit whining. I'm guessing the mods would have done something if it could be done.

For every 5 you see me or other mods have struck down 40. We're workin for ya man. I do temp-perma ban most of those users who are clearly just computers sporting golf ads or pills. Shoot me a message if you see something I don't. Please.

I second Blaz's comments. You'd be amazed how much gets nuked. It annoys me at least as much as you, so believe me, I ain't ignoring it. And remember folks- hit the "Report Post" button on a spam thread, and all us mods get an email that points the way- that way, we don't rely on having to "spot" spam.

Ill volunteer my time for mod duties.
Very familiar with VB since I own VB and two other car sites, a go kart site, and moderate another car forum with VB and working on another as we speak..
But I still have PLENTY of time to help.
Let the admin know. Thanks!

Not all spam the mods can see. Some guy was putting random links and other crap on my album pics in the comments. Just flag them and within a little bit a mod will remove it.

two things for everyone:

1. In the top right corner of every post (to the right of the post number) is a white triangle with a red outline and a black, vertical line in the center. If you see spam, click that triangle on the spammer's post, and then report the post!

2. Do not post in a spammer's thread, or post a message pertaining to the spam. (If they get responses on there post(s) it encourages them to spam more.)

Simply ignore, and report the spam, the moderators will get to it A.S.A.P.

If you were advertising something and people started responding to an advertisement would you possibly post more advertisements in that area?

Also, who knows if the spammer(s) even read the replies, you could be making fun of the advertisement, or telling them to go away, but they may not read that and just assume you responded because you were interested.

nine times out of ten the spammers never come back to see if they even have replies. Bottom line, they dont care.
They only come back to stir up more, and to post more spam.
Best way to fight spam is to not let them on the site in the first place. That is where it starts.

How would you stop spam before they even posted? Just let mods do their jobs and forget about it. Who cares if there is a spam thread up for 10 minutes.

How? If you have never seen the back end of a site such as this I would not expect you to understand or have the answer to this that is why you are asking how?
No offense, you just dont have the experience to answer that question.
Who cares? I would hope anyone that hates spam, you included would.
You guys have no idea what it takes to moderate spam or combat against it on a forum such as this. If you are a site owner, or a moderator then you DO know what it takes, and my apologies for offending anyone on this topic.
I will add this. If the board is not set up in a way to fight spam directly, you can have 10k moderators and it would not PREVENT spam from occurring. If you do not mind looking at spam in any given post or thread for 10 minutes, you are encouraging spammers to visit this site.
Do you not think spammers are reading this very post?

Oh for the love of pete I didn't mean for this to turn into a can it be done thread.

yes it can be done.

nor did intend it to turn into a thread where people come in with smart azz comments . Yes I know how to reoprt, and nobody was whining, just merely pointing out the fact that there has been a substantial increase in spam not only starting useless threads ot also hijacking laget threads.

What about those sites that require you do do simple math or answer a basic question to complete the sign up?

I know we have a simple question for using the search function, but I can't remember if there was when I signed up.
I would be up for being a mod :)

Absolutely. There is reaction, and there is proaction. Right now, we react to spam. To proact upon it would mean that the spam would never make it to post.

Do you not think spammers are reading this very post?

Actually, I'm not convinced of this. Personally, I think they just grab whatever opportunity they have, and drop one. Case in point, we've had spam that's not only written in Chinese, but in the actual Chinese characters. If the poster (bot?) had actually paused to read anything, I would think the posts would have been either in English, or English characters, at least. At any rate, I personally believe that any opportunities will be taken advantage of, regardless of whether we type responses or not. I generally ask people not to respond, so I have less to filter through and delete later.

To be fair, my moderating experience is limited to this very forum. In all other forums that I have held membership in, it was simple user status. So- my theories may be off. Everybody is "new" at some point. What it boils down to is this- for as long as I am asked to deal with spam in the manner that we do, I will continue to do it. If policies change, or our process changes from reactive to proactive, then I will act accordingly.

For the record, I volunteered my services because I hate spam. But I don't just hate spam for the simple sake of it being spam. I hate spam because it wastes everyone's time- you see that there's a new post- "Hey, this might be useful!", only to get into it and discover that it's really just an ad for pills to make...

...my second point. And that is, the kids. I am aware of some younger members here, and I'm sure that there's many more that I'm not aware of. Being a father of two pre-teens (9&11 years old), I get especially annoyed by the, ahh, "male enhancement" stuff. I know I can't protect the kids forever, but in the meantime, I don't think it's very appropriate.

-And on the OFF CHANCE these idiot-sticks are reading this- read further, stupid! Do you really suspect that a forum populated largely by teens and twenty-somethings need those little blue pills? Man, if I had those pills at that age, I'da ended up either dead or in prison!:roflol:
