Enjoy. The belt runs OVER the top of the idler and the springs provide tension. You push the clutch pedal to release the idler.

As for the easy clutchless set-up. USE a BELT tentioner pulley for a clutch. They work great. When you engage the clutch, it take belt pressure off the engine shaft and the belt stops while the engine pulley continues to spin. Best to use HEAVY duty belts with this type systen as the belts are less likey to BURN up as fast as the engine pulley spins inside the loose belt. It would be good to set it up so the belt loses all contact with the spinning pulley while the tentioner is engaged. It is just as good as a real clutch and belts are much cheaper than clutches anyway.Scott

You can slip your average 1/2" belt ALOT before it wear's too much. I see the same car everyday that slip's the belt's on the alt/pump constantly.

Tyler is right, you can slip the belt SO much before you get in trouble.

The only time you get problems is slipping the clutch while the belt is not moving so it is just wearing the belt away in 1 point. If you do this it can damage the belt pretty easily.

The heavy duty belts were made to take that abuse. The belt has a white or green woven cloth type stuff bonded around it.

modelengineer:::I am interested in seeing a keyway milling machine. I may need to buy one in the future. What other purposes can they be used for? Thanks. Scott(East Coast Buggyz Inc.)

You'l need a nice machine to take a long axle. I always wondered how they got the 3/16 keyway inside the 3/4 bore clutch post on the Polar racing clutche's. He reaveiled the secret to me.

Kenny is correct, I used a vertical mill with an end mill.

For internal keyways I use the lathe as a shaper, or my Douglas 10.5" Shaper.

The mill only has to have enough travel to do the keyway. You don't need to fit the entire axle on the milling table. You take the axle and move it across for the second keyway, if you need one at either end of the axle.

If you wanted a machine to just do keyways, I would get a shaper because they can do internal AND external keyways.

Comet clutches are awsome stuff! I want to do a kart using a snow mobile type clutch set up.

Hey, if you do, be sure to use the Comet 500 Series torque converter, it offers the widest speed reduction ratio of them all - .81 top end - 3.24 low. Now that's having the best of both worlds...:sifone:

... but it was $25 all up for pulleys and a brand new belt...

For the price of just the torque convertor I could get a 110 cc motorbike engine, 4 speed with centrifugal clutch.

I was looking at the Comet 44C ......I think that is the one. For up to 18 hp I believe and for around $150 . I also believe that includes the axle pulley. I really gotta try this once! I do like belts also. I will be using this on my Honda GXS? 390 (13 hp)! I can't find a chain clutch system that handles over 8hp!!!!! Why????? I don't want to go to the Torque-a-verter either. This is a Comet 780 series wide ratio TC which means more torque and top end, I got this one (complete kit with belt) on Ebay for just $75 and believe me this thing combined with the GX390 makes my front tires go airborne easily.

Thanks, I appreciate the encouragment! I am excited about doing this project and going to belts. I do know that when simular type clutches are used in snowmobiles, they rip up the snow(even packed snow) easily! I think it will be a great improvement over the limited torque chain clutches.
