penny pincher project

Okay so I have started my mini bike project finally after saving up some money so that I could finally get started I have begun the collection phase. I am farely new to the whole building thing but I definitely know I will be needing some help. so I have these items so far;

I apologize in advance for the quality of photo's they're shot from a blackberry

So my first question is my ratio is going to be 4.5:1 -54/12, How does that ratio sound? does it limit my capability??
second is that there seems to be a jackshaft, if i am correct.. so is it completely necessary or can i just run it to the axle?
finally, the drum like thing on the front wheel... half a brake? can it be salvaged?

ordered brake lever and cable via ups

Use the jack shaft if you drastically need to gear up/down it would be nice to use it and have a smaller sprocket on the wheel. But you don't need it. Cool frame btw.

6:1 ratio is genrally the # to start with. Thats why you need a jackshaft because of your large tires + youll most likely not line up properly with the offset of the engine to the rear wheel. check out oldminibikes.com guys here seem to be a bit more into karts. Looks like you got a speedway there but im not sure

found you jeep '03, nice projects you have going on dude.

removed gastank today and I have been contemplating whether or not to take the governor off.. I have read most of the debate about leaving it on vs. taking it off, for a beginner to this.. Are the walkthrough's pretty straight forward, or is this something a rookie to the biz should avoid?

cool :) Yea if your going to leave the motor stock and its just a rider for around the yard or whatever theres not a real good reason to remove the goveroner. And it does make it smoother and some piece of mind that your probrobly not doing damage to the engine when your topping it out

I am finding it rather difficult to remove the governor, as I said early I am really new at all this engine gizmos but I have looked at two governor removals sites, and I must not be getting the picture because the instructions are rather confusing in my opinion...
I think I may just leave it in for now, im not sure...

but I am having difficulties removing the keyway from the shaft of the engine, how do i get it off so I can get the clutch on?

what do you mean removing the keyway from the shaft? is there a key already in there? your engine looks new, shouldnt have one but if it does a small hammer and a flathead screwdriver should work.

you need the jackshaft at the pivot point or very close to the pivot point of the suspention to keep the distance between each set of sprockets the same so the chain will stay tight

No reason for a jackshaft, it will not do anything. how do you think dirtbike chains stay on? with the amount of travel his suspension has it shouldnt matter.

he has a mount for one and the sprocket is on the right side of the wheel (not that that really matter two bolts and it switched)but thats true with the little amount of travel he has prolly won't make that much difference
it wound be a step up though

the travel WILL cause his chain to fall off i have had many bikes with this problem. you either need a chain tensioner or a jackshaft like him. your bike is a rupp by the way.
