hey I was looking at upgrading from a predator 212 for a 420 or a 459 I'm leaning towards the 459 because its got better power and torque and I like the looks of it a bit better but dose anyone know if there are any flywheels for this or could I mill (lethe) arc flywheel for a 420 and do that? also what should I do for gearing I'm using a stock 40 series torque converter most people use 10 to 48 tooth but could I go smaller because I cant rev as high but its go the power. anything helps

A lot more parts ( hop up parts ) available for the 420 as compared to the 459.
Red beards garage and The Grey Goat Garage both have videos on the 459. It's been a while since I watched them, but neither of them liked the bigger engine.
Moving from a 212 to a nicely warmed up 420 will be a substantial increase in both horsepower and torque.

I recently watched RBG video and he said he liked it better than the 420 but it won’t be better until there are parts the grey goat hated the engine tho also I think its to late for getting the 420

My 420 is all stock except for "blueprinted stock" Tillotson carb and some external adjustments on the governor linkage.
It is installed on a "mudmower" and I honestly do not think there is any reason for any sane person to put one on a kart.
Maybe a dune buggy. If a 420 does not have enough torque for your needs, you might need a V twin.

yea a 420 dose not have enough torque that's why I went with a 459 also why not put it on a kart predator 212 is just not enough

Advantage- torque torque torque
Disadvantage- weight and parts are expensive if you can get any.
The good thing about any GX engine is that performance mods involving labour and a dremel will reap rewards.
Skim the head for higher compression, gas flow the head, remove the oil sensor and governor, install good carb and exhaust. It'll be a torque monster. Don't change the cam or springs, this will ensure there's a mechanical limit to over revving.

what about the flywheel is that also a mechanical limit to over revving because if it happens my back will become eviscerated

what about the gearing its right now a 10 tooth to a 55 and with the predator 212 it would do about 35 but i would like to go quicker could I drop down to a 48?

Should I run a flat slide carb?

Flywheels don't just explode, they have a safety factor of operation. We run a standard flywheel on one of our tarmac karts, this has had the above work done. The 390 falls flat at 5500rpm. The cam and springs prevent it going any higher.
In this video we're just sorting the ignition. All standard apart from 32degrees ignition and head work. carb and exhaust have been changed.
Kart build is around 10 years old

It amazes me on how many guys won’t even baseline an engine before they tear it apart to make it run worse with expensive parts.
I’m not ordering expensive parts im broke I get that chineseum stuff like chukinis I can’t afford a 200$ makiuni also I’m going to do a baseline but I know it’s not going to be fast also back then I was scared to upgrade my engine the most I would do is an exhaust. I’m going to do a baseline then stage 1 kit then I’ll get a carb and a gov delete I want to get information on each upgrade and see what gains I get I just prepare ahead of time that way I even bother asked these questions.
