has anyone ever thought of the yamaha rhino or the can am commander?! If you could buy the drivetrain for a wholesale price.. Or get an old 4x4 side by side with everything BUT the drivetrain broken.

Those things are way too heavy anyway.. just make the new 4x4 as light as possible, with a hummer-like IFS... and selectable steering. Thats what i dream of making...

I had thought about this at one point. To get over the center differential and drive train binding issues, my idea was to include a v-belt, pulleys, and tensioner as a makeshift "transfer case."

Hook the tensioner to a hand lever and that will let you select between RWD only or 4x4.

Also, since the V-belt can act as a clutch by varying the tension, you could set the tension just slightly loose...just enough so it slips when the drivetrain wants to bind but grabs when the rear tires what to break loose.

You would basically have a pulley on the rear axle, a belt between that and another pulley on a jack shaft. The other side of the jackshaft has a sprocket, a chain between that and another sprocket on the front axle.

four wheel drift = twice the drifting fun!! haha

it would be ver simple to do with a strong enough engine..

edit:

i been contemplating using multiple clutches as a manner of controlling wheel slip sorta thing.. almost like center diff sorta deal.. kinda work more like a tracion control.. but would work the same to control front to rear slippage..

5 clutches AND a TC on one kart.. hmm.. maybe a bit much.. keep the rear full live axle? use 3 clutches.. or live front and rear and use 1 clutch.. ? (All with one TC of course..)

I bet that you would kill the TC trying that. Well, probably just belts, but I don't think it will end with a happy TC.
