For those of us who may run our karts some distance from our shops, what items would you suggest to include in an onboard tool kit?

depends I'd say!

cell phone is a good start just in case, but it's not actually a tool-kit is it ;)

Apart from the obvious?
a knife, flat and philips screwdrivers ... or a leatherman :D
and some bolt matching nuts of your choice (with a ratchet)??

I'd say a masterlink for the chain you have is not too bad to have it around
Maybe something to get a flat tyre back to work again (maybe just those spray cans)
paracord comes in handy every now and then.
a small amount of sandpaper (fine'ish medium grit)
~same amount of cardboard.
four rows lustre terminal.
a bit of strong wire;
and of course (just for Doug) Duct Tape!

that should MacGyver you out of the woods in most cases ;)
ah yes.. that reminds me.. a swiss army knife and a small torch (aka flashlight)

Crescent wrench, tire plug kit, hose clamps.
And pliers
Maybe zip ties.

In my buggy I carry all those along with rope.... So you can get towed back.

You forgot the most important thing......a pint of whiskey! !!!!

May not get you out of the woods....but it might not make you worry so much about getting out..........

Seriously. ...the absolute most important thing besides a cell phone. ...is a good first aid kit......the kart can be replaced. ..or wait to be repaired. ...you may not have that luxury...

Hmmmmm......I heard you rednecks from WV carry a rope for a different reason.........

Whoa.....I am only living here.... Lol
I am born and raised from south Florida.

You know what cracks me up about West Virginia...?
I see so many confederate flags around, but WV is the bastard state.
It was created to be Unionized.

The rope can also be used for tieing your whiskey up so it doesn't get too far from you.

while I fully agree...

you can improvise most of a good FAK with a good toolkit (and your clothes),
but that doesn't work as well the other way around ;)

medical alcohol is a good thing to have...
but as stupid as some of your US laws are.. it might be a problem if it's in a KIDS kart's tool or first aid kit, right?

I agree with Nick's pliers (leatherman comes with pliers ;))
and the adjustable wrench (to tighten a nut and counter the bolt);
zip ties are useless in a makeshift toolkit IMHO,
they didn't serve but ONE purpose and that can be improvised with a small amount of wire or paracord ... or duct tape ;)

PS now who makes us a paracord woven toolbag how to?

itsid. just where on Doug would you apply the duct tape?:lolgoku:

Not going cross country or anything, and I want to keep the kit small, but it makes sense to have spares and tools for the easy fixes. Some good suggestions so far. Along with the tire plug kit, maybe one of the small hand operated tire pumps carried by bicyclists? I dislike Slime, because sooner or later it'll have to be cleaned off the rim. Since I have an electrical system, I suppose I could carry one of the mini 12V pumps, but that may be a bit too elitist. Maybe a spare tubeless valve stem and a core tool. A small first aid kit and some super glue for when a passing twig gouges us. Cell phone has a flashlight (torch) ap. Tiny oiler for the clutch bushing.

Keep 'em coming.

duct tape on Doug.. please don't get me started ;)
he'd end up mumified :D

torchapp on the phone isn't exactly nice, once you needed that in a "repair situation" you'll find that some small round thing can better be held with your mouth than a phone ;)

Doug IDK I can't remember having a sissy bag..
No wait.. I had one indeed.. it was a giveaway from the skateshop when I got my powell peralta deck.
(a "vision street wear" thingy... :ack2:)
Only used it to keep my spare grommets and bearings together...
never had in in 'regular use' ;)

or do you mean the paracord...
That lanyard monkeyfist with the old school mouseball inside?
I used to have one of those on my backpack for a while...
*shrugs*

I tend to run 5-20 miles out from the home front with 2 to 3 karts. I tend to figure out the most common size sockets and wrenches needed per kart. From there you will notice what tends to come loose etc. I bring common size bolts and nyloc nut's. I also bring the basics such as a couple of crescent wrenches and vise grips. Mechanics wire is as good as zip ties in the aspect of it should work to get you home, but it will eventually fail. Bring things that you know you will need. I also bring a belt or 2 depending on what karts are leaving the shop, because you never know. Ive gone on longer trips and have brought throttle cables.

Cell phones are only worth it if you have signal..

Prior to leaving make sure every bold/nut/tie is snug and where it should be.

"an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

I have 100's of miles of minimal maintenance roads that i can get to from my land.. I am slowly getting my tool pack to the point where i am ok with it. The more/further you run the more you realize what you need and dont need, adjust accordingly.. Hope that makes sense ;)
