What they don't know is that the joke is on them regarding me. I don't have a bank account, credit card, or anything of the sort. If you're gonna rob me then you're gonna have to do it in person and I really wouldn't reccomend trying that.

Everyone likes to scam.

Was in walmart the other day and the guy at the counter was like one more day and i have enough vacation to take off 5 minutes every morning. put in the PTO time for it off and i don't have to come in early. working the system.

Crazy we used to have to work more then 45 hours to get over time. Since we were all salary. Some would put in that they worked 9 hours every day so that if they did work overtime they could get paid for it! Since salary employees didn't clock in and out they fill out a time card.

now im salary exempt. no paid overtime! Worked 10 hours monday and now im hear at work from 8am - 7:40pm!!! think ill work 4 hours tomorrow to even it out :)

This is a family site so I can't tell you the replies I've sent those, it's graphic and involved goats!
Phone solicitors are easy and can be fun, I've put them on hold for 20 mins, while making dinner. Ten minutes to find my pen, got it. Then 10 while I told them I'm running to the neighbors for paper.
I picked up and immediately was told I'm a muther &$@!?&. We went back and forth. Eventually he hung up. So fun

I never fell for this weird scam when I was 16. Some person was pretending to be a survivor of a civil war in Africa and she would be "inheriting" $12,000,000. All I had to do was send $1200 to some "Swiss" bank To unlock the ability to get the money.

I looked into the whole thing and quite a few people were scammed out of money. I turned ED the tables on them and it was glorious.

Needless to say though I'm still p'oed at Yahoo.

When I owned my restaurant, I was constantly getting solicited by scammers. You know it's a scam when a guy wants hundreds of chicken Caesar salads, and somehow, some way, you are gonna pay upfront something to someone. Large tip off: Caesar salads aren't on the menu.

I did get yanked once for 2 grand. The guy wasn't some Nigerian prince though. But he was good.
He got caught, was ordered to pay everyone back, and went to jail.

I never got contacted about the lawsuit.

Edited to add: If you have a bunch of spare time, and want to get involved in scamming back, or tripping up the scammers, there's a whole website dedicated to the cause.
Some of these people there are way craftier than the scammers themselves.
If nothing else there's some good reads where people put the scammers through some serious paces.

I know a local guy whose mom almost got scammed out of $1500. Someone called pretending to be her granddaughter and said they'd just gotten into a wreck and needed a $1500 money order to stay out of trouble. She actually went to the bank to get the loot, and they informed her that it was a scam. It stressed her out so bad that she collapsed and hit her head on the way out and spent about a week in the hospital over it. He really hopes to find out who it is, and I hope he does too because this cat WILL handle business. Unfortunately the odds are against him though.

that happend to my grandma too, posing as grandson, saying he is stranded or something. Luckily at 80 yrs old she still has her faculties and told him off. Those types of scams must be pretty successful as they are fairly common.

Another scam i ran into a few times is that stupid automotive warranty bullcrap. They call with the premise that your warranty is on file with them, about to expire, and that they need to update your information. scammy/unethical, just like most of 'telemarketing' today.

The ultimate litmus test is that if you don't go out looking for it yourself, you can just ignore them. If you have a problem with your tax return/credit card/fedex shipment/long lost rich uncle king from west africa etc etc etc, you just ignore whatever email/call and theres going to be a 99.99999999% chance that it was a scam. Makes me feel sorry for those that are aging that lose the ability to detect when someone is pulling a fast one on them.

To a lesser extent, most marketing can be seen as misleading to get you to buy something:

'money back' when you buy a car
'free security system equipment'
'free smartphone with a plan'
'free go kart plans on kartfab.com' ehh what?
cash, prizes, or a short term discount when you sign up withe the power company
cable
power
blah blah blah
sales at the store that aren't really ever not a sale
discount coupons
discount codes
kohls cash
credit card cash back ( just rack up some more debt, spend more money, the goal is to have you deeper in debt, or at least spending all your money through the card)
flash sales
special % off if you sign up, only to have it increase later
product reviews designed to make you buy through an affiliate link
websites with free forums that make money off adsense!
black friday
cyber monday
christmas!
facebook ads
blog posts
snapchat ads
instagram ads
reduce your mortgage payment, just extend the loan indefinitely by refinancing so all you pay is interest, forever!
clearance items, crap that you would never buy anyway!

ahhh crap everything is a scam!!! im going to go hide under a rock now. I just realized ive been scammed into buying everything i own, and everything i look at online is designed to make me buy something, or capture my attention while im shown an ad. heck, even the US economy is based in large on 'consumer spending'.. crap! im a consumer and all i do is consume!

Oh man I just remembered what happened to my mom.

Her PC got the virus webpage that says contact us to remove the virus from your pc! And she called them! They wanted like 400 to fix it! luckly she called me on the other phone. She had let them connect to her pc already through logmein or something like that :smiley_omg: I had her hang up on them and unplug her pc! Luckly it was only a DNS spoofer running that redirected all pages to this virus protection site. ughh... they must get a ton of people this way!

No way 400 to fix a PC that only cost 500!

People, Chrome has extensions. you can put a really good ADBLOCKER on chrome and it blocks most virus sites. People are getting smarter about getting around it. but. for the most part it is great! look into it.

Even pandora extension if you don't want it to ever stop playing.

There was one a couple years back called Cryptolocker or something like that, where your computer got a virus and it would hold your files and data by a certain time and pay I believe 200 BitCoin. Otherwise all your crap is deleted.

I use Web of Trust and Ghostery. There was an excellent adblock we called AdBlock Edge, which was even better thanks AdBlock Plus. AB plus is now a complete joke because they are paid off to show ads. Bunch of sell outs.
