that happend to my grandma too, posing as grandson, saying he is stranded or something. Luckily at 80 yrs old she still has her faculties and told him off. Those types of scams must be pretty successful as they are fairly common.
Another scam i ran into a few times is that stupid automotive warranty bullcrap. They call with the premise that your warranty is on file with them, about to expire, and that they need to update your information. scammy/unethical, just like most of 'telemarketing' today.
The ultimate litmus test is that if you don't go out looking for it yourself, you can just ignore them. If you have a problem with your tax return/credit card/fedex shipment/long lost rich uncle king from west africa etc etc etc, you just ignore whatever email/call and theres going to be a 99.99999999% chance that it was a scam. Makes me feel sorry for those that are aging that lose the ability to detect when someone is pulling a fast one on them.
To a lesser extent, most marketing can be seen as misleading to get you to buy something:
'money back' when you buy a car
'free security system equipment'
'free smartphone with a plan'
'free go kart plans on kartfab.com' ehh what?
cash, prizes, or a short term discount when you sign up withe the power company
cable
power
blah blah blah
sales at the store that aren't really ever not a sale
discount coupons
discount codes
kohls cash
credit card cash back ( just rack up some more debt, spend more money, the goal is to have you deeper in debt, or at least spending all your money through the card)
flash sales
special % off if you sign up, only to have it increase later
product reviews designed to make you buy through an affiliate link

reduce your mortgage payment, just extend the loan indefinitely by refinancing so all you pay is interest, forever!
clearance items, crap that you would never buy anyway!
