Can anybody tell me what a Solenoid is for? I am going to build an electric go kart and this kit https://www.amazon.com/Conversion-Kit-Motenergy-Controller-Accessories/dp/B00C81F40A comes with a solenoid what does that do?

It is basically a switch that is activated when electricity passes through it. Can also be a controller for something mechanical.
A car's starter motor has a solenoid that when energized pushes the starter gear against the flywheel in order to turn the engine over (starting).

A solenoid is a remotely activated switch that allows you to use a low current circuit to engage a high current circuit without the need for expensive bigger wire and heavy switches connected to power the high current circuit.
