I would definately say it is your clutch that is the fault. When you push the kart around with the engine off, does the clutch also turn as if it is engaged? I have a feeling that your clutch is sticking and when you try start it on the ground it is as if you are stopping your kar in gear without the clutch in, the car just dies.

Try a new clutch, or put a drop or two of oil on the bushing ONLY. You don't want oil getting elsewhere in the clutch

So just to update this thread....I put a new clutch on the kart and it worked perfectly. The spring in the Max Torque had worn out so the clutch was not engaging properly. Thanks for everyone's input.

Yeah, the engine should be idling at no more than 1800, often you can get them to idle well below that if you want...

Sounds like the clutch isn't letting go. With the chain off, the sprocket part of the clutch should spin freely on the crankshaft. If lubing the bushing doesn't help, take a look at the clutch shoes and the retracting spring, perhaps the spring is broken or the shoes are stuck.
