Is there anything wrong with putting the axle mounts on top of the pipe, so that the axle runs above the frame? It is backwards from anything I have ever seen, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I thought with 18" wheels that it might be too high off of the ground, so maybe I'll have to flip the axle around. But I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

18" diameter wheels means the axle will be 9" above the ground. That's not very high at all.
My dingo has about 3" IF THAT ground clearance. Keep in mind your gonna have a sprocket and a brake disc there too. Don't want them dragging.View attachment 147401
I guess. And come to think of it, since I will be bending my own frame (HA!) I can make the back section of the frame however much higher than the front that I need to accommodate the large wheels. We'll see.
