I scored a sweet kart from a guy locally (my first...feeling like a kid again) thinking it would run great, it started in his truck with the wheels hanging out (clutch was stuck from sitting)and revved up good while in the bed. He stated that it was jetted so big that you had to " blow into the gas cap" to pressurize the system and it may need a new diaphram. We took her home and checked the oil and wanted to ride her.... to start it you have to hold your hand over where the aftermarket filter goes well we did that and off i went...for about 5 seconds. then the same thing...blow into the tank crank, crank, crank and hold the intake with my hand and it started up for like 5 seconds again. sooo...i downloaded a parts breakdown for my model and got the engine gasket set and carb kit.

My question is this, why did they take out the choke assembly and do i need to replace it?They filled the holes inside and out with a sealant that doesnt seem to hard to get out but can i just run it like this is it benificial to not have it? and at the bottom of the intake is a hole it says on the parts book that it is a vaccum port? where does this thing hook up to and do i need that also? and lastly do i really have to blow into that bitter tasting hole thats on top of the tank cap or was he just wanting me to look like a dumbask?

i have the carb off and cleaned every thing out, put the new needle and stuff in it that comes in the kit and the new diaphram...also the old one wasnt torn or anything but looked like it lost it's elasticity. It also has and aftermarket header on the motor i dont know if that will matter

it is a B&S 5hp horizontal shaft. whats crazy is it all started with a weedeater i found thrown out and wanted to put it on a bicycle...now look what i've got! The motor isnt the one in the picture.

They took out the choke for more flow, this cart is probably jetted for use with methanol alcohol and if it has been the carb cannot run gas properly ever again.

:( way to bring a man down. well IF it wasnt...he said his son raced it in the "stock" class...would i still need to blow in the tank? i picked out all the silicone and put a choke kit on it and i hope that will cure the holding my hand over the intake. so now it has a choke, new diaphram, new needle valve and the brass seat it goes to. it get great spark the wire even came off the plug and it was arc'ing from almost 1/4 inch away. also across from the choke there is a port that has silicone in it also...i left it in what goes there? and the vaccum port do i need it hooked up or do i need to plug it off?

That port (big hole near airfilter)is the engines crankcase breather, it should be hooked to the valve spring access panel on the engine (behind the gas tank) or it should be plugged off and a hose attached to the engine leading to a filter/catch tank, It is very important that this hole in the engine be filtered as it sucks and will suck in dirt. Does the old needle valve seat thing (called the jet) have a bigger hole than the new one? If so put it back and run the cart on alchohol or buy a new carb.

Catch tank, It is also a weight bar that's why it looks big. It just catches air, oil, water. And you can see the hose's coming from the valve cover. The valve cover MUST be billet.:roflol: :sifone:

Thats a dragster catch can, a cart catch can (sometimes called a puke tank)is about the size of a water bottle (people have used modded water bottles), and has a airfilter, crankcase hookup, and a oil drain.

Replace the jet and buzz off. A carburetor kit is around $25 away. New jet, needle, diaphram, tank gasket... need I say more?

Go buy some HEET from your local WalMart. Not ISO-HEET, HEET in the red bottle. 99% pure alcohol/methanol.

Enjoy.

im still kinda lost with the catch tank
what does it do and where does it atatch?

It attaches with a hose to the rubber elbow on a plate behind the gas tank, when the piston goes up and down it makes pressure and vacuum in the crank, pressure can blow oil out(stock it would go in the intake the engine would bog and smoke and it would then spin back up, not something wanted when racing) and vacuum can suck in dirt, the catch can catches oil and has a filtered vent.

Ask the guy that sold it to you what fuel it uses, put the jet that came with it back in and run what its made to run.

awesome you guys are real informative. I'm still wondering why he wanted me to blow into the gas cap though.

It primes the fuel pump.

There is no fuel pump on a 5HP Briggs... unless you mean the diaphram which is "technically" the fuel pump.

If it was a good carburetor (correctly jetted, not gummed, ect. ect.) it would prime itself. You're manually priming it with the blowing the tank.

The diaphragm is the fuel pump, it pumps fuel into the bowl, making it a pump for fuel or a fuel pump.
