Finally I have found a place where people building go karts can talk to each other! Ive been looking for a place like this forever.

Now, on to the Kart. I am going to be starting my first project, and for that I bought the Honda knock off from harbor freight. This leaves me 2 questions. First: My engine will not idle by itself. It will just run really rough for about 10 seconds and die. Someone told me to bend the bar that is connected to the carb to make it open up a little more at idle. Is that OK or should the motor run good out of the box?

Second: If im going to have a cheap-o engine, should I take it back and get a 13hp version instead of moding my 6.5hp? Or will I just kill myself? Keep in mind I am gonna be using a very small frame, like as small as a shifter kart.

Thanks in advance guys!

Welcome, and about the engine not running, you did put oil in it? You shouldn't have to bend any bars. There are adjustments on the carb for that sort of thing.

Haha, yes i did put oil in it. It runs fine at higher RPM's, it just wont idle. I did find the little thing to adjust how closed the carb can go. But what do you guys think about getting a 13hp engine? I see that most of the torque converters only take up to 8hp so im a little worried about getting anything bigger than my 6.5hp.

Make no changes to engine and call Harbor Freight IMMEDIATELY and ask for a return authorization number and a replacement engine. If you make any changes they make not take it back. This engine should run perfectly well out of box (should be warmed up for at least 5 minutes). When I got mine I was able to put on clutch, connect throttle cable, fill with oil and gas and run. No B.S. at all.

Nah, I use the choke to cold start it, but I turn it off right away. But when it starts to die, I put the chock back on and it still dies. So it just wont idle. But I adjusted the little screw for the carb and it runs like a champ now.
