i'm trying to do all the work myself. this is a toy for the garage for me and maybe my son in a little while.

i bought it on craigslist for 200 bucks, and got a total of 3 briggs motors. one was some type of racing flat top motor of some sort, i have no idea... also i recv'd about 40 sets of gears for it as well. they are all 35 tooth chain gears ranging from 54 to 76.

from what i have gathered it is a margay chassis. it already had a 5 hp conversion on it with a briggs motor that ran well... until i ran it.

i got it home, cranked it, ran it 5 minutes and the motor made a heck of a noise. it was done, and instead of trying to fix it i went to HF and bought the blue ohv motor.

so far i got the motor mounted with the included brackets, it's very stable. i also bought a hilliard 12 tooth 35 clutch at northern tool while i was out and about.

when i went to move the sprocket holder on the rear axle i tightened the bolt a bit too much and stripped it. now i am left with trying to figure out how to geat a bolt through it to tighten it, or go to northern tool and buy a new one for 18 bucks.

i have attached pics...

i have a buddy who used to race these little karts, and he gave me a body kit for free... although it doesn't fit perfect i think i can get a dremel and modify it to make it look ok.

it's only going to be a neighborhood toy, not a track kart.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. i have a few issues i will list below:

brake is a disk brake and is not that firm?

throttle is hooked to pedal from previous motor, but i have no idea how to put it on the new one?

i got the engine running it sounds great, but the throttle lever is not moving, do i loosen the bolt?

i want to leave it governed, so with the 12 tooth clutch, what size sprocket would you guys run on the back... i literally can choose anything i want, although when i test fit the 76 (largest i had) it was too tight and the motor was hitting the rear tire.

i will keeep everyone updated!

after all the good response about the motor from all of you that's why i bought it.

question though, when i crank it the clutch automatically starts to spin... do i need to put a spring to pull the throttle back to the almost stalling position to keep it from leaving without me?

i also went to a buddy's house today and he gave me an exhaust header and a bunch of different stock mufflers from some of his GSXR's... thinking of doing something ridiculously big across the back of the cart...

i'll post some pics of my ideas later this evening... trying to get the newborn fed and sleeping so i can play for a bit.

Wait, are you talking about it spinning when you don't have the chain on? If so, thats normal, and is just spinning because of a little friction, and you can stop it by holding it with your foot. If it's on the ground though, you might want to lower the idle

exactly what i was talking about, and thanks... i have yet to pull the air cleaner box off as of yet to mess around with that, figuring out why the throttle lever doesn't move, and hooking up the throttle line itself.

it's a work in progress and i don't get much time with the newborn but the weekend should give me time to certainly get it running. my next projects would be fabbing up brackets to make the body work, and think more about the exhaust.

i put one of the motorcycle cans up to it and i will have to go a different way with that... any suggestions?

what about a cut down version of a little aftermarket honda 50 exhaust? if you can see in the pics i HAVE to move that box, or take the chance of frying my elbow if i don't pay attention... lol

Your buddy's not wanting to adopt me by any chance or we can be buddy's too - I'm very flexible.

Kibble hits the nail on the head - NICE!

is that under the main bolt that holds the throttle lever in position?

and as far as the body kit and and exhaust neither work out but i can certainly play with everything and not have to call it a loss if it doesn't work.

hopefully this evening when i get home i'll have it running.

i'm going to stop by northern tool on the way home and pick up one of their uni-hub sprocket holders... just hope it's heavy duty enough to hold up to everything...

got some time to work on it and it's ALMOST done. hooked up the throttle... did it the easy way and straight to the big throttle arm coming out the side, adjusted the brake and tested doing 180's in front of the house... lol...

all i have left to do is get one new tie rod tomorrow so i can turn all the way left, finish cutting the body and trim a bit and make brackets, and next week the exhaust will be here...

i got a little all chrome system for a 125 cc dirt bike and it comes complete with a lot of pipe so it should be easy to find some sort of turn in it to make it look ok.

ONE more question, and probable a dumb one... but i want to leave the governor on, how do i get a little more "oomph" out of it? i already replaced the plastic washer with a metal one thanks to a member, but someone said something about replacing some type of spring so i could turn 4500 or better rpm's and still be safe...?????

thanks guys, and PICS coming soon... probably tomorrow afternoon.

Nice project! I'm not familiar with these "Blue" motors, but you can probably just manipulate (bend) the gov linkage so your throttle opens up a little more at WOT.

Get the brakes worked out? If they're hydraulic, you may need to bleed the system. If they're mechanical, you probably just have to do some adjusting.

Gook luck with the kart and the new addition. Hope the new one is happy and healthy.

anyone want to buy it now... i took my son on it the other day and he got scared... so you get the margay 1.7 limo chassis, new 6.5 hf blue, 3 extra B&S motors, 2 running and one flat top bored out, 6 or 8 extra rims and 15 or 30 extra tires, 30 - 40 sets of gears, extra chain and master link, clutch puller, brand new air saw from harbor freight, the banshee body, extra sprocket holder, and anything extra in the garage that is kart related...

i'd keep it for me, but i built it for me and my lil' buddy to play with and he got scared doing donuts...

i'm in Jax, FL... anyone close or know someone... throw me some ideas on what i should ask for this thing... i'm sorry if this violates any rules and if so can someone direct me toward the right forum... if it's ok i'll put my # on here and if not someone can take it down... 904-228-9698

Ditto you CANNOT sell it because he is scared. Take him to a open place where he can drive at his skill level. In the first 10 minutes or so he might be scared. Within a hour you wont be able to get him off the cart!. I was scared to HECK the first pass in my junior dragster I mean like who wouldnt be scared having your arms and legs and everthing else straped in. PS how old is your son?

Noes! Dun sell it :(

A.R.C. has vertified a yellow clone's flywheel can spin 5500RPM safely.

Use a GX160 governor spring... if ya want a few more RPMs.

wish i could, but my mind (according to wife) has been made to get rid of it... also to make room in the garage as well. i have too much stuff... mower, mower trailer, mercury watermouse boat, my little 50 and the boys 50, etc...

also, i just put 2 new tie rods on it as well... can someone give me an idea of how much to ask for it... considering all the extra's as well...

and i just remembered i have another 4 piece body for it too.

after looking in the garage if someone is close and wants it i can throw in 17 boxes of hardwood floors too... lol... but i'm serious...
