Newbie and 10 yr old son working on a kart

Hey All --

We got a 1/2 built go kart a few months ago, and we're ready to really get it into shape. Got a Predator engine on it, got a clutch that may work, trying to get a good brake on it, getting the throttle set up, and we have a really tiny question to start (this is from the Dad). Here it is: our chain flew off the go kart when we were testing it. We lost the master link and another piece of the chain that is hard to describe but we could probably find a picture of it easily (to a newbie, it looks like a piece that covers the two prongs of the link). So the question is: do we have to have to get a new chain or can we just find the two missing pieces used/online somehow. Just curious. Looking forward to being in the group. Thanks!

That little "cover piece" was part of the master link. Measure the chain, and we can link up a bunch of master links for sale online. You don't need to replace the whole chain.

The part you described is the C-Clip
the masterlink's lock so to speak ;)

And yes it's easy to loose one if you install it in reverse
the closed side should point in the direction of chain travel otherwise
if it catches on something the moving chain will just brush it off.

Master links do come with new C-Clips anyways, so no worries.
all you need is a matching master link (be sure to buy the one made for your chain size..
a #40 masterlink does NOT fit on #41 or 420 chain,
a #41 master should NOT be used on 420 chain!
and so on and so forth.
a #35 masterlink will not even fit on your sprocket if you use 1/2" pitched chain (#40, #41 or 420)
so there's a bit to look out for.

As Budget said: tractor supply should serve you well...
but you can also order them online if that's easier for you
(we no have no tractor supply around here for example ;))

I thought so..

I'm a city kid.. no farm no tractors around (well that's a lie)
but the next tractor/farm service is probably 3hrs from me
[via unrestricted german autobahn ;)]

No hardwarestore around stocked chain (in any size)
(frankly those bastards stock more wallpaper and flowers than tools)

So my point remains valid.. online IS an alternative for some of us ;)
